Ice on the walls is the usual complaint
A kimchi refrigerator normally has no ice maker at all, so an ice complaint here is almost always ice forming where it is not wanted. On a direct-cooled cabinet the walls themselves get cold, and frost on them is normal - it becomes a fault only when it thickens enough to trap the containers or block the drain.
What you are seeing
- A layer of frost or ice on the compartment walls.
- Containers freezing to the wall and needing force to lift.
- Ice building around the drain point at the base.
- Contents at the wall side are frozen while the middle is not.
- Frost returns quickly after being cleared.

Most likely causes, in Dimchae order
- Normal frost on a direct-cooled wall — Why ranked: First, because it is not a fault. A thin, even layer on the cooling wall is how this design works and it is expected.
- Containers pressed against the wall and freezing to it — Why ranked: Second: contact with the cold surface freezes whatever touches it, which is why loading habits matter more here than on a fan-cooled cabinet.
- Humid air entering repeatedly through a large opening — Why ranked: Third. Every lid opening admits moisture that condenses and freezes on the walls, and a household that opens the lid often will see more frost.
- Gasket leaking, so warm moist air enters continuously — Why ranked: Fourth. This is the version that produces thick, uneven ice rather than a thin even layer, and it is worth acting on.
- Drain blocked by ice at the compartment base — Why ranked: Last, and it is the consequence that turns a frost complaint into a water complaint.
What to check, in order
- Look at whether the frost is thin and even or thick and patchy. — Because: Thin and even is normal on a direct-cooled wall; thick and patchy means moist air is getting in.
- Note whether containers are touching the walls. — Because: Contact freezing is the second cause and it is fixed by how the cabinet is packed.
- Check the gasket along the whole opening for flats and splits. — Because: A leaking gasket is what turns normal frost into an ice problem.
- Look for ice around the drain point at the base. — Because: Ice at the drain is what leads to water later, so it is worth catching at the frost stage.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off a compartment wall with a knife or a screwdriver - the cooling circuit runs inside that wall, and piercing it ends the appliance. Let ice melt rather than forcing it; the coils are behind the surface you are chipping at. Never use a heat gun or boiling water on the compartment walls. Support the lid while working inside a lid-type cabinet.
When this becomes a service call
Ice returns thickly within days of a full defrost. Ice forms with a good gasket and normal lid use. The drain at the base cannot be cleared once the ice has melted. The cabinet freezes contents in a storage mode rather than only at the walls.
