Check the mode before the machine
A Dimchae is a kimchi refrigerator, and the first thing to establish is which mode it is in. These cabinets deliberately hold different temperatures for fermenting and for storing, and a compartment that seems warm is very often a fermentation setting doing exactly what it was told. Only after the mode is confirmed does a cooling fault become likely.
What you are seeing
- One compartment is noticeably warmer than the other.
- Contents are cool but not cold in a compartment set for fermenting.
- Cooling recovers slowly after the lid has been open.
- The cabinet holds well at night and struggles in a hot kitchen.
- The compressor runs far more than it used to.
- Not this fault: A completely dead cabinet with no display is a no-power fault - read the will-not-start page.
- Not this fault: Ice forming on the compartment walls is normal for a direct-cooled cabinet, not a fault.
Most likely causes, in Dimchae order
- Compartment set to a fermentation or storage mode rather than to cold — Why ranked: First on this appliance and by a wide margin. The mode is doing what it was asked to, and the setting is on the panel rather than inside the machine.
- Contents packed against the cooled walls — Why ranked: Second: a direct-cooled cabinet takes heat out through its walls, so containers pressed flat against them block the very surface that does the cooling.
- Lid or drawer gasket not sealing — Why ranked: Third. A large flat opening with a single long gasket loses more air per second than a small door does, so a slack seal shows up quickly.
- Ambient temperature high, or the cabinet in a warm spot — Why ranked: Fourth. These cabinets are often installed in a utility area or a balcony space, and ambient has a direct effect on how well they hold.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Why ranked: Last. It is the only cause here that is unaffected by mode, loading, seal and ambient, which is exactly how it is identified.
What to check, in order
- Read the mode set for each compartment on the panel. — Because: On a kimchi refrigerator this single check resolves most warm-compartment complaints before anything is measured.
- Put a thermometer in each compartment and read it after a settled day. — Because: Measurement rather than feel, because a direct-cooled cabinet feels different to the hand than a fan-cooled one.
- Pull the contents away from the compartment walls. — Because: The walls are the cooling surface on this design, and blocking them slows everything down.
- Check the lid or drawer gasket along its whole length for flat and hardened sections. — Because: A long gasket on a large opening is the third cause, and it is judged by touch.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below and a freezer at 0 F (-18 C) or below; a fermentation mode is deliberately warmer than that, so judge stored food by the mode it was actually kept in. Never pull a full kimchi refrigerator alone - loaded containers make it a heavy appliance. Do not defeat a lid switch to keep the cabinet running with the lid open. Sealed-system and refrigerant work is licensed work.
When this becomes a service call
A compartment stays warm in its coldest storage mode after a full day. The compressor runs continuously and the cabinet still cannot come down. There is any hissing or oily residue at the back of the cabinet. Both compartments fail together with the modes set correctly.
