The panel is the load
On a panel-ready cabinet the door carries a custom cabinetry front, and that weight is what most door complaints come back to. A heavy panel pulls the hinge down over time until the seal no longer meets the frame at the top, and the first thing owners notice is condensation rather than a gap.
What you are seeing
- Condensation on the frame or the panel edge.
- A visible gap at the top corner of the door.
- The door no longer pulls itself closed over the last part of its travel.
- The panel edge has begun to rub the cabinetry.
- The compartment runs warm in humid weather.

Most likely causes, in Designer order
- Hinge sagged under the weight of a custom panel — Why ranked: First on a panel-ready unit. A gap at one top corner with the opposite corner still tight is the fingerprint of sag rather than gasket wear.
- Panel fitted heavier or further out than the hinge was set for — Why ranked: Second: the further the panel sits from the hinge line, the more leverage it applies. This shows as a door that has always been slightly wrong rather than one that changed.
- Gasket hardened or out of its channel — Why ranked: Third. It matters, but on a panel-ready cabinet it is usually a consequence of years of uneven closing rather than the starting cause.
- Cabinet not level or the opening out of square — Why ranked: Fourth. If the opening is twisted the door cannot meet the frame evenly however the hinge is set.
- Door closer or cam worn — Why ranked: Last, and it presents as a door that stays wherever you leave it instead of pulling itself shut.
What to check, in order
- Look along the closed door against the frame and note where the gap is. — Because: A gap at one corner is alignment; an even gap all round is the gasket or the cabinet.
- Close the door on a paper strip at four points and pull each out. — Because: Even resistance everywhere means the seal is fine and the problem is elsewhere.
- Open the door to a small angle and let go. — Because: A door that does not swing shut has lost its closer cam or is out of level.
- Check the cabinet is level side to side and front to back. — Because: An out-of-level cabinet defeats every hinge adjustment, so it has to be settled first.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A custom panel makes a refrigerator door genuinely heavy - never work under an open door alone, and never adjust a hinge with the panel still loaded if it can be taken off first. Do not pull a built-in from its opening alone; it is a heavy appliance. Never wedge or tape a door to close a gap. Keep fingers clear of the hinge line when testing door closure.
When this becomes a service call
A gap remains after the cabinet has been levelled and the gasket cleaned. The hinge is visibly deformed or the door drops when opened. The custom panel is rubbing the surrounding cabinetry. The compartment cannot hold temperature despite an even seal.
