Why a built-in runs warm
Designer is a series and private-label name rather than a factory, and it usually appears on panel-ready built-in refrigerators fitted into cabinetry. That installation is what decides cooling performance: a built-in rejects its heat through a grille at the top of the cabinet, and once that path is blocked the unit cannot hold temperature. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below.
What you are seeing
- The compartment is cool but never properly cold.
- The compressor runs almost continuously.
- The freezer holds while the fresh food side warms.
- The cabinet above the grille is hot to the touch.
- Cooling recovers after the doors have been left shut for a day.
- Not this fault: A completely dead cabinet with no light is a no-power fault - read the will-not-start page.
- Not this fault: Frost on the back wall with good temperatures is normal defrost behaviour.
Most likely causes, in Designer order
- Top grille or toe air path blocked by cabinetry or debris — Why ranked: First on a panel-ready built-in. The signature is a hot cabinet face above the grille together with a compartment that never comes down.
- Condenser fouled with dust behind the grille — Why ranked: Second: built-ins draw kitchen dust through a narrow path and the coil loads up faster than on a freestanding unit.
- Custom door panel heavy enough to pull the door out of seal — Why ranked: Third. Panel-ready doors carry real weight, and a seal held slightly open all day loads the system continuously.
- Air damper or diffuser between compartments blocked by contents — Why ranked: Fourth. Packing items against the diffuser starves one compartment while the other stays cold, which matches the split-symptom pattern.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Why ranked: Last. It is the only cause here that behaves identically whether the grille is clear or not, which is how it is separated from the rest.
What to check, in order
- Put a hand above the top grille while the compressor runs. — Because: Hot air there means the path is working; no flow at all is cause one and needs no tools.
- Pull the grille and look at the condenser and the fan for dust. — Because: This is the second cause and it is the routine maintenance a built-in rarely gets.
- Check whether one compartment is cold while the other is warm. — Because: A split result points at the damper and the loading, not at the sealed system.
- Close the door on a paper strip at several points around the frame. — Because: A heavy custom panel that has pulled the door out of seal shows here immediately.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below and a freezer at 0 F (-18 C) or below; judge food that has been warm by time and temperature rather than by smell. Never pull a built-in out of its cabinetry alone - it is a heavy appliance in a tight opening. Do not run the unit with the grille removed for more than the check itself. Sealed-system and refrigerant work is licensed work.
When this becomes a service call
The compartment stays warm with a clear grille and a clean condenser. The compressor runs continuously and the grille air is not hot. There is any oily residue or hissing behind the grille. One compartment cannot be brought down with the diffuser clear.
