The cabinet is part of the noise
A cabinetry-integrated refrigerator shares its structure with the kitchen around it, so noise complaints are usually contact rather than mechanism. A cabinet touching a stile, a loose grille or a custom panel that has come slightly proud will all buzz far more loudly than the compressor ever does.
What you are seeing
- A buzz that seems to come from the cabinetry rather than the unit.
- A rattle from the grille area that starts with the condenser fan.
- A ticking that follows the fan blade.
- A knock at the moment the compressor starts or stops.
- A gurgle after the compressor shuts down.
- Not this fault: A loud click with no cooling at all is a start fault - read that page.

Most likely causes, in Designer order
- Cabinet or panel in contact with the surrounding joinery — Why ranked: First on a built-in. Hand pressure on the panel or the stile changes the sound, which no internal fault does.
- Grille loose or a fastener missing — Why ranked: Second: the grille sits directly in front of the fan and buzzes as soon as it is not held firmly.
- Debris on the condenser fan blade — Why ranked: Third. Built-ins draw kitchen dust through a narrow path, and lint on a blade unbalances it and produces a tick.
- Fan motor bearing worn — Why ranked: Fourth. The sound rises as the motor warms and does not respond to pressure anywhere on the cabinet.
- Compressor mounts hardened — Why ranked: Last, and it presents as a knock at start and stop rather than a continuous noise.
What to check, in order
- Press a hand on the panel, the stile and the counter edge in turn while it runs. — Because: A change in the sound identifies contact noise immediately and rules out the mechanism.
- Note whether the noise starts and stops with the condenser fan. — Because: Fan-linked timing separates debris and bearings from everything structural.
- Check every grille fastener is present and tight. — Because: A loose grille in front of a running fan is a very common and very simple finding.
- Listen for whether the knock coincides with the compressor starting or stopping. — Because: Start-and-stop knocks point at mounts rather than at anything rotating.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach into a condenser fan with the unit powered - it starts whenever the compressor calls, with no warning. Do not pull a built-in from its opening alone. Never pack material around a running unit to quieten it; the airflow is what it depends on. Wait for the fan blade to stop before reaching anywhere near it.
When this becomes a service call
A grinding or screeching noise that does not respond to pressure and is not debris. A knock at every start that has become louder over time. Noise together with a loss of cooling. Any noise accompanied by a burning smell.
