Where the smell comes from
A dishwasher smells because water and food residue are sitting somewhere warm and dark between cycles. On a compact machine with a small filter and a short drain, that happens faster than it does on a full-size unit. Almost all of it is cleaning rather than repair.
What you are seeing
- A stale or sour smell whenever the door is opened.
- A musty smell that transfers to clean dishes.
- A drain smell that is worse after the machine has stood unused.
- Dark residue in the door seal channel.
- The smell returns within days of a clean.

Most likely causes, in Dencrest order
- Filter and sump holding food residue — Why ranked: First and by a wide margin on a compact machine. The filter is small, it fills quickly, and it is the one part owners never think to remove.
- Door seal channel holding residue and moisture — Why ranked: Second: the channel around the door traps debris and stays damp between cycles, which is why the smell is strongest at the door.
- Machine left closed and damp between cycles — Why ranked: Third. A sealed wet tub grows exactly what you would expect. Leaving the door ajar changes it within days.
- Drain hose or standpipe holding stale water — Why ranked: Fourth. A drain smell that is worse after the machine has stood, and that arrives from the sink side, points here.
- Grease film on the tub walls and spray arms — Why ranked: Last, from repeated low-temperature washing, and it needs a hot cycle rather than a wipe.
What to check, in order
- Open the door and smell at the filter, at the seal and at the top of the tub in turn. — Because: Where the smell is strongest is where the residue is, and this locates it before anything is dismantled.
- Twist out the filter and look at what is caught in it. — Because: This is cause one and it is usually decisive on the spot.
- Run a finger around the door seal channel. — Because: Dark residue on the finger is cause two and explains a smell that is worst at the door.
- Note whether the smell is worse after the machine has stood unused. — Because: A stronger smell after standing points at the drain rather than at the tub.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix cleaning products in a dishwasher - bleach and any acid descaler together produce a hazardous gas in a closed tub. Broken glass hides in the filter and sump; use a cloth and good light rather than bare fingers. Never run a cleaning cycle with dishes or cutlery in the machine. Do not leave the door ajar where a child or a pet can pull on it.
When this becomes a service call
The smell persists after the filter, sump and seal have been cleaned and a hot cycle run. There is standing water in the tub as well as a smell. The smell arrives from the sink drain rather than from the machine. There is any burning or electrical smell at all.
