The door does two jobs
The door on a compact machine is the part that decides whether it runs at all, because the interlock lives there. On this badge the two complaints that dominate are a catch that no longer holds and a seal channel packed with residue, and both are visible with the door open.
What you are seeing
- The door will not stay shut, or springs back slightly.
- The machine only starts if the door is pushed hard.
- Water or suds escape at the bottom of the door.
- The door drops open under its own weight.
- Residue builds in the seal channel and the door smells.

Most likely causes, in Dencrest order
- Catch or strike worn or out of alignment — Why ranked: First on a compact machine. A door that needs a push to start has a catch that is no longer reaching the interlock on its own.
- Seal displaced, dirty or torn — Why ranked: Second: the channel collects residue, the seal lifts out of place, and water finds the gap at the bottom of the door.
- Door hinge or spring tension lost — Why ranked: Third. A door that drops rather than holding position pulls the seal unevenly and stresses the catch as well.
- Machine not level, so the door does not meet the tub squarely — Why ranked: Fourth. This produces a gap at one side only and no amount of seal work will fix it.
- Door panel or trim disturbed after a custom front was fitted — Why ranked: Last, and only where the front has been changed - it shifts the geometry the catch depends on.
What to check, in order
- Close the door gently and see whether it holds without a push. — Because: A door that needs help is cause one, which is the difference between a machine that runs and one that does not.
- Look along the closed door for a gap and note which side. — Because: A one-sided gap is level or hinge, not seal wear.
- Run a finger round the seal channel for residue and check the seal is seated. — Because: This is cause two and it is both the leak and the smell in one.
- Open the door halfway and let go. — Because: A door that drops has lost hinge or spring tension, which also explains a catch that keeps going out of alignment.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A dishwasher door that drops freely can trap fingers and can tip a loaded machine forward - treat it as a fault to fix rather than a habit to work around. Never tape or wedge a door closed to make the machine run. Do not lean or sit on an open dishwasher door. Let the door and seal cool before cleaning them after a hot cycle.
When this becomes a service call
The catch is broken or the door will not hold at all. The seal is torn or will not stay in its channel. The door drops freely when opened halfway. Water escapes at the door after the seal has been cleaned and reseated.
