The short answer
On a DCS refrigerator, where the water is coming from comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a built-in or outdoor enclosure that has been altered since the unit went in, because most surviving units of this era sit in a cabinetry run or an island that has since been re-decked, re-countered or re-grilled, and the air path is the first thing that changes when that happens. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- A pool of water on the floor at the front of the cabinet, usually appearing overnight.
- Water standing under the crisper drawers or a sheet of ice on the floor of the fresh-food section.
- Ice building up on the floor of the freezer under everything stored in it.
- Water running down the inside of the back wall and freezing in a layer at the bottom.
- A wet patch behind the cabinet rather than in front of it.
- Damp or buckled flooring at the front edge that appeared before the leak was noticed.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the outside of the cabinet is wet with condensation rather than running water, the seal and the room humidity are the subject, not a leak. - A leaking water supply line or inlet valve — Why this rank: On any cabinet plumbed for water or ice, the fitting at the back is the only place with pressure behind it.
- Warm humid air entering past a bad seal and condensing — Why this rank: A leaking gasket is a steady supply of moisture, and moisture in a cold box becomes water on the floor.
- A door being left ajar or blocked by contents — Why this rank: A door held open by a bottle produces exactly the same puddle as a mechanical fault, and it costs nothing to rule out.
What to check, in order
- Work out whether the water is clean and cold and whether it appears when the cabinet is running or when it is off. — Order: First — Why: Meltwater and supply water leak on completely different schedules, and this one observation halves the list.
- Empty the fresh-food section and find the drain hole at the back of the floor, then pour a little warm water into it. — Order: Second — Why: It is the top-ranked cause and the test is definitive: if the water does not disappear, the drain is blocked.
- Put a level on the top of the cabinet front to back and side to side. — Order: Third — Why: A forward tilt explains a front-of-cabinet puddle even when the drain is clear, and it is corrected with the feet.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the drip pan and, if the cabinet is plumbed, at the fitting where the line enters. — Order: Fourth — Why: These are the only two places a leak can start behind the cabinet, and both are visible without tools.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or moving it. — Tools: none — Time: a moment
- Dry the floor completely and lay a sheet of paper towel under the front edge and another behind the cabinet, then leave it a day and see which one is wet. — Tools: paper towel — Time: overnight
- Clear the fresh-food floor, find the drain outlet and flush it with warm water from a turkey baster or a small bottle. — Tools: turkey baster or squeeze bottle, warm water, towels — Time: several minutes
- If the drain will not clear, feed a soft length of trimmer line or a pipe cleaner gently down it and flush again. — Tools: trimmer line or pipe cleaner — Time: several minutes
- Level the cabinet with the front feet so it sits level side to side and a shade high at the front. — Tools: spirit level, adjustable wrench — Time: several minutes
- Pull the cabinet out, look at the drip pan, seat it properly and empty it if it is full. — Tools: flashlight, towels — Time: half an hour or so
Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water on a floor beside a plugged-in appliance is a shock hazard — dry the floor and cut the power before you kneel in it. Never poke a metal tool into a drain you cannot see the end of; the evaporator tubing runs behind it.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the drain will not clear with warm water and a soft probe, when the leak comes from a fitting on the water line, or when the water is arriving from behind the evaporator panel. A blocked drain that keeps re-freezing usually means the defrost circuit is also failing, and that is meter work.
