The short answer
On a DCS refrigerator, why the door is not sealing comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a built-in or outdoor enclosure that has been altered since the unit went in, because most surviving units of this era sit in a cabinetry run or an island that has since been re-decked, re-countered or re-grilled, and the air path is the first thing that changes when that happens. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- A sheet of paper closed in the door pulls out with no resistance at one or more points.
- The gasket is torn, flattened along one edge, or pulled loose from its channel.
- Condensation or frost forms around the frame, or the outside of the door sweats.
- The door swings open on its own instead of self-closing at the last inch.
- The door does not line up with its neighbour or with the cabinet edge.
- The cabinet runs far more than it used to, without any other change.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the door seals but the cabinet is still warm, the seal is not the problem — read the cooling page. If water is pooling inside rather than beading on the outside, that is the drain and belongs on the leak page. If the door will not latch at all on a hinged unit, look at the hinge and the strike before condemning the gasket.

- A magnetic strip that has weakened or slipped in its channel — Why this rank: The magnet, not the rubber, is what holds most of these doors, so a strip that has slid within the gasket leaves a soft spot.
What to check, in order
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at points all the way round the frame and try to pull it out at each point. — Order: First — Why: It maps the failure to a location, and the location is what distinguishes a worn gasket from a hung door.
- Put a level on the cabinet and check that it sits level side to side and slightly high at the front. — Order: Second — Why: It is the second-ranked cause, and a door that will not self-close will never seal reliably regardless of its gasket.
- Wash the gasket and the frame with warm soapy water and dry them, then repeat the paper test. — Order: Third — Why: Residue is a common cause that a visual inspection misses entirely, and cleaning is both the test and the repair.
- Look along the gap between the door and the cabinet from the side, and check the hinge screws for movement. — Order: Fourth — Why: A visible taper along the gap is a hinge or shim problem, which no gasket will correct.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any hinge hardware or panel. — Tools: none — Time: a moment
- Wash the gasket and the frame with warm soapy water, working into every fold, then dry both thoroughly. — Tools: cloth, warm soapy water — Time: half an hour or so
- Run the paper test at points all the way round and mark every failing point with tape. — Tools: a sheet of paper, masking tape — Time: several minutes
- Level the cabinet with its front feet until it sits level side to side and a shade high at the front, then check that the door self-closes from part-open. — Tools: spirit level, adjustable wrench — Time: half an hour or so
- Warm a set gasket gently with a hair dryer on low and work the flattened section back into shape by hand. — Tools: hair dryer, cloth — Time: half an hour or so
- Snug the hinge fasteners, checking after each that the door still swings freely and lines up with the cabinet edge. — Tools: nut driver or screwdriver — Time: half an hour or so
Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or hinge hardware. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator door is heavy and it becomes unbalanced the moment a hinge is loosened — have a second person hold it. Never remove or defeat a door switch or a latch to make a door close more easily.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the paper test still fails after cleaning, levelling and reseating, when the door liner behind the gasket is cracked, or when the door has visibly dropped on its hinge. A gasket is an owner part on most cabinets, but a door that has to come off to fit one is a two-person job with a torque sequence.
