The short answer
On a DCS refrigerator, why there is no ice, or bad ice comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a built-in or outdoor enclosure that has been altered since the unit went in, because most surviving units of this era sit in a cabinetry run or an island that has since been re-decked, re-countered or re-grilled, and the air path is the first thing that changes when that happens. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- The bin is empty and the ice maker has not cycled in days.
- Ice cubes are small, hollow, or fused into one lump.
- Ice tastes or smells of whatever was last stored uncovered in the freezer.
- The ice maker cycles, dumps and fills, but the water freezes in the fill tube instead of the mould.
- Water pools in the mould and never freezes, or overflows the mould.
- Ice forms as a slab across the bin rather than as separate cubes.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the whole freezer is not making cold, the ice maker is a symptom — read the cooling page instead. If water is on the floor rather than in the bin, that is the leak page. If the cabinet has no ice maker at all, the complaint is usually frost on the freezer wall, which is a defrost question.

What to check, in order
- Confirm the bail arm or the shut-off is in the on position and nothing is holding it up. — Order: First — Why: It is the cheapest cause on the list and it accounts for a striking share of no-ice calls.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and confirm it is holding 0 °F (−18 °C) or below. — Order: Second — Why: A freezer above that will not harvest, and no work on the ice maker will change that until the temperature is fixed.
- Look at the fill tube where it enters the ice maker for a plug of ice. — Order: Third — Why: It is visible without tools and it explains a mould that never fills while the valve is working perfectly.
- Force a harvest with the manual test the manual gives, and listen for the valve buzzing as the mould fills. — Order: Fourth — Why: It exercises the whole circuit in one cycle and tells you which stage stops.

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the ice maker or any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never use a knife, a screwdriver or a pick to break ice out of a mould or a bin — the mould heater and the water tubing are directly behind the ice. Shut the water supply off at the valve before disturbing any fitting.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the freezer holds 0 °F (−18 °C), the bail arm is on, the fill tube is clear and the mould still does not fill, or when the mould fills and never harvests. Testing a valve and a mould heater means metering a live circuit, and that is where the homeowner part of this stops.
