The short answer
On a DCS freezer, why there is no ice, or bad ice comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a built-in or outdoor enclosure that has been altered since the unit went in, because most surviving units of this era sit in a cabinetry run or an island that has since been re-decked, re-countered or re-grilled, and the air path is the first thing that changes when that happens. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- The ice maker in an upright cabinet has not cycled in days and the bin is empty.
- Cubes are small, hollow or fused into a single block.
- Ice smells or tastes of stored food.
- The mould fills and never releases, or releases and never fills.
- Water freezes in the fill tube before it reaches the mould.
- Frost is building on the freezer walls and there is no ice maker at all.
- Note: Near-miss symptoms that mean a different fault: If the whole cabinet is soft, the cooling failure comes first and the ice follows it. If water is reaching the floor, read the leak page. On a manual-defrost cabinet with no ice maker, an ice complaint is usually a frost complaint.

- Check the bail arm or shut-off and clear anything holding it up. — Order: Second — Why: It is the cheapest cause on the list and it accounts for a large share of no-ice calls.
- Look at the fill tube where it enters the mould for a plug of ice. — Order: Third — Why: It is visible without tools and it explains a mould that never fills while the valve works perfectly.
- Run the manual harvest test from the manual and listen for the valve buzzing as the mould fills. — Order: Fourth — Why: It exercises the whole circuit in one cycle and shows exactly which stage stops.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the ice maker or a panel. — Tools: none — Time: a moment

- Put a thermometer in the load, close the cabinet, and read it after several hours. — Tools: thermometer — Time: overnight

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the ice maker or any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice from a mould or a bin with a metal tool — the mould heater and the water tubing sit directly behind it. Shut the water supply off at its valve before disturbing any fitting.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the cabinet holds 0 °F (−18 °C), the bail arm is on, the fill tube is clear and the mould still will not fill, or when it fills and never harvests. Testing a valve or a mould heater means metering a live circuit.
