The short answer
On a DCS freezer, why it is not freezing comes down to a short list, and on this line the order is not the generic one. The diagnosis starts at a built-in or outdoor enclosure that has been altered since the unit went in, because most surviving units of this era sit in a cabinetry run or an island that has since been re-decked, re-countered or re-grilled, and the air path is the first thing that changes when that happens. The first three checks below need no tools and no parts; the point at which this stops being an owner job is stated further down, as a condition rather than as a recommendation.
What you are seeing
- Contents are soft, packages sweat, and ice cream will not hold its shape.
- The cabinet runs continuously and never satisfies.
- A thick frost slab on the evaporator wall while everything else is soft.
- The outside of the cabinet is hot to the touch, particularly at the sides.
- The unit recovers after a manual defrost and slides back within days.
- A chest cabinet is cold at the bottom and warm in the top layer.

What to check, in order
- Put a thermometer in the middle of the load and read it after several hours. — Order: First — Why: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below; without a number there is nothing to diagnose against.
- Look at the condenser — the coil on the back or behind the front grille — and at the space around the cabinet. — Order: Second — Why: It is the top-ranked cause on every freezer, and it is confirmed by looking rather than by testing.
- Check what the room temperature actually is, and compare it with the climate rating on the cabinet plate. — Order: Third — Why: An out-of-rating room explains a healthy cabinet that fails anyway, and no repair will fix it.
- Empty the cabinet and measure the frost thickness on the walls or the coil. — Order: Fourth — Why: A slab is both the cause and the cure, and it separates a frost problem from a sealed-system problem cleanly.
Steps a homeowner can take
- Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before moving it or opening any panel. — Tools: none — Time: a moment
- Move the contents to a cooler or another freezer before you start, and keep them covered. — Tools: cooler, blankets — Time: half an hour or so

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip frost with a metal tool — the evaporator tubing runs immediately behind the panel and a puncture ends the cabinet. Do not use a heat gun or an open flame to speed a defrost. A chest cabinet full of frozen product is extremely heavy; empty it before you move it.
When this stops being an owner job
Call when the coil is clean, the room is inside the cabinet’s climate rating, the cabinet has been fully defrosted and the seal passes, and it still will not reach 0 °F (−18 °C). What remains is behind the evaporator or inside the sealed system.
