The short answer
A Costway dryer that ends its cycle with a damp load is usually misjudging dryness or short of airflow rather than short of heat. On this class the usual cause is a compact machine working at the rate it was built for, with a drum packed too full to tumble next to rule out, and both are owner checks.
What you actually observe
- A small load dries and a full one never does — Capacity rather than fault, and easily tested.
- The load is hot outside and wet in the middle — Air is reaching part of the load and not the rest.
- NEAR MISS: the machine will not start at all — That is a separate page, with interlocks and supply at the top of its list.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A compact machine working at the rate it was built for — Ranked first on a Costway unit: a compact machine on an ordinary socket has a fraction of the heat of a full-size dryer, so the first question is whether anything is wrong at all.
- A drum packed too full to tumble — Air only dries what it can reach, so a packed drum returns a load that is hot outside and wet in the middle however long the cycle runs. Ranked second here: a small drum is overloaded at what looks like a modest wash.
- A load too small for an automatic cycle to sense — Ranked third here: the sensing on this class needs contact it rarely gets from one or two items.
- A cycle or option that ends cooler and earlier than expected — Ranked fourth here: last, though a small panel makes an option easy to select unnoticed.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Feel the air at the door a few minutes in rather than judging by the finished load — Warm air and a long cycle together is a capacity story, not a fault.
- Look at how full the drum is and whether the load tumbles freely — A drum about half full when loaded is the usual guidance and most people exceed it.
- Note whether the short cycles happen only with very small loads — A fault that appears only on small loads is a sensing limit rather than a fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Halve the load and run a full cycle to see what the machine can actually do — A smaller load that dries properly tells you the machine is sound.
About 90 min
- Take a third of the load out and run it again — Two smaller loads finish faster and use less energy than one packed one.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off or a duct is disturbed. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. Lint is the fuel in almost every dryer fire, so a restricted duct is urgent rather than an inconvenience, and a dryer must never be run with its vent discharging into the room.
When to call a technician
Call once the sensing, the duct, the load and the cycle are all clean and the results are still poor, because a thermistor or a control fault needs a meter and panels off. Call sooner if the cabinet is unusually hot or there is a smell of hot lint, since that is a fire risk rather than a performance problem. Bear in mind when you decide that parts for a value import are not stocked locally and a replacement unit can cost less than a part plus a labour call.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Costway dryer as a class, not one family or model line. Sensor arrangements, cycle structures and duct specifications all change from build to build and are deliberately not here. Where a family or model page exists for your machine, it is the more specific answer and the one to read first.
