The short answer
Most Costway dryer noise is a loose object, a worn support or an installation rather than a failing motor, and the timing of the sound tells you which. On this class the usual cause is a machine out of level or resting against something, with coins, zips or buttons loose in the drum or the blower next to rule out.
What you actually observe
- It is noisy on one floor and quiet on another — The floor changed and nothing else did.
- A rhythmic thump that keeps time with the drum — Anything keeping time with the drum is riding on it.
- NEAR MISS: the drum does not turn at all — That is a different page, with the belt, the door switch and the supply at the top of its list.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A machine out of level or resting against something — A dryer that rocks on two feet, or that touches a wall or a washer beside it, passes its ordinary vibration into whatever it is against. Ranked first on a Costway unit: a machine designed to be moved is the one most likely to be standing on an uneven floor right now.
- Coins, zips or buttons loose in the drum or the blower — Small hard objects work out of pockets and either tumble noisily with the load or pass into the blower housing, where they rattle against the fan on every revolution. Ranked second here: a shallow drum on this class puts anything loose straight against the front.
- The machine touching joinery, a pipe or a wall — Ranked third here: a compact machine is used wherever it fits, which usually means touching something.
- Lint or debris in the blower wheel — Ranked fourth here: last, though the small blower on this class is easily fouled.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Push each top corner in turn and see whether the noise changes — A sound that shifts under a hand is a mounting problem rather than a component one.
- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and listen, then run the machine empty — An object tumbling with the load is obvious once the drum is empty.
- Look for shiny rub marks where the machine meets anything around it — A rub mark is a contact point and it is visible without moving anything.
What an owner can safely check
- Level the machine on its feet and leave a finger's gap to anything beside it — A spirit level front to back and side to side is the whole job.

Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before reaching past the drum or removing any panel. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. A burning smell with a noise means stopping the machine and clearing the vent, because lint is the fuel in almost every dryer fire. The blower wheel keeps turning after the motor stops and its edges are sharp.
When to call a technician
Call once the drum, the level and the duct are all clean and the noise keeps time with the drum or ignores the load entirely, because rollers, belts and motor bearings all need the machine largely dismantled. Stop immediately and call if the noise comes with a burning smell. Bear in mind when you decide that parts for a value import are not stocked locally and a replacement unit can cost less than a part plus a labour call.
