The short answer
A Costway dryer that runs cold is more often being stopped by its own safety devices, or by the air path they protect, than by a failed heater. On this class the usual cause is a compact machine simply working at the rate it was built for, with a drum loaded past what the airflow can carry next to rule out.
What you actually observe
- It dries a small load fine and a big one not at all — Capacity rather than fault, and easily tested.
- Clothes are damp and the cycle has ended — The machine believed it had finished, which is worth knowing.
- NEAR MISS: there is a smell of burning or of hot lint — Stop the machine and clear the vent before running it again, whatever else is wrong.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A compact machine simply working at the rate it was built for — Ranked first on a Costway unit: a compact machine on an ordinary household socket has a fraction of the heating power of a full-size dryer, so the first question is whether it is faulty at all.
- A drum loaded past what the airflow can carry — A packed drum does not tumble, so the hot air never reaches most of the load and the machine returns washing that is hot on the outside and wet in the middle. Ranked second here: a small drum is overloaded at what looks like a modest wash, and a packed drum dries almost nothing.
- An air-fluff or no-heat cycle selected — Ranked third here: these panels are small and an air setting is easy to select without noticing.
- A blocked lint filter or a restricted vent duct — Ranked fourth here: last, though the short duct on this class still blocks with lint.
Check in this order, and why this order
- Feel the air at the door after a few minutes rather than judging by the finished load — Warm air with a long cycle is a capacity story, not a fault.
- Look at how full the drum is and whether the load tumbles freely — A drum that should be about half full when loaded is the usual guidance.
- Look at which cycle and which temperature are actually selected — An air or fluff setting is the commonest no-fault cause of a dryer that will not dry.
What an owner can safely check
- Halve the load size and run a full cycle — A smaller load that dries properly tells you the machine is sound and the load was too big.
About 90 min
- Take out a third of the load and run it again — Two smaller loads dry faster and use less energy than one packed one.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off. If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside; do not look for the leak yourself. Lint is the fuel in almost every dryer fire, so treat a restricted vent as urgent rather than as an inconvenience. Never run a dryer with its vent disconnected into the room.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter, the duct, the cycle and the supply are all clean and the machine still runs cold, because an element, an igniter or a thermostat needs a meter and panels off. Call immediately rather than investigating if you smell gas, and leave the building first. Bear in mind when you decide that parts for a value import are not stocked locally and a replacement unit can cost less than a part plus a labour call.

What this page does not cover
This page covers the Costway dryer as a class, not one family or model line. Element ratings, fuse positions and burner assemblies all change from build to build and are deliberately not here. Where a family or model page exists for your machine, it is the more specific answer and the one to read first.
