A leaking refrigerator is a plumbing problem in the sense that everything involved is a pipe, a channel or a tray, and none of it is under pressure except the fill line. Start with the drain, because a blocked drain is the most common cause by a wide margin and the cheapest to clear. What follows is arranged by likelihood rather than by how interesting each cause is.
What this looks like from the outside
- Water standing inside, under the crisper drawers — Water collecting in the bottom of the liner means it never reached the drain, which is a blockage rather than a leak. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.
- Ice building under the bottom drawer — Meltwater freezing where it collects because the drain is not taking it away. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
- A trickle down the inside back wall — Meltwater running past the drain opening rather than into it.
- Water only on a plumbed cabinet — A supply connection rather than the defrost path, and it is under pressure whenever the valve is open. Give it a moment rather than glancing; the thing you are looking for is not always obvious.
Likely causes, ordered
- A leaking supply line, filter housing or inlet connection — This is the cause that justifies closing the stop valve first and asking questions second, because pressure does not wait for a diagnosis. If this is the cause, the evidence for it is usually visible rather than inferred.
- A door seal letting humid air in — Condensation is not really a leak, but it wets the same places and gets reported the same way, so it belongs on the list: the moisture is coming out of the air rather than out of a pipe.
- A weeping supply connection behind the cabinet — On a plumbed machine this is the one pressurised source, and the trace it leaves is usually visible with a torch. A cause in this position is worth eliminating before you spend anything.
- A door seal letting humid air in — Extra moisture has to condense somewhere, and it collects at the bottom of the compartment where it is mistaken for a leak.
What to look at first, second, third
- Decide first whether the water is inside, in front or behind — Those three locations map onto three different causes, and guessing wrong means chasing a drain that was never blocked. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.
- Close the water stop valve and watch for a day — If the puddle stops entirely, the leak is on the pressurised side and the drain is innocent. Eliminate it properly before moving down; a half-checked cause comes back later.
- Run a sheet of paper round the door seal — A leak of humid air explains damp without a puddle, and ruling it in or out costs nothing. It needs nothing you do not already own.
What an owner can safely check
- Mop out standing water and ice from the compartment floor — Lift the drawers, sponge the water out, and let ice melt rather than chipping at it. Chipping is how liners get holed. It is worth doing properly once rather than quickly twice.

- Close the supply stop valve and dry the floor — This is the first move whenever the volume is large: it stops the pressurised source while you work out where the water is coming from. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.

Power, water and hands
Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off. The power being off is not the same as the machine being safe to touch immediately. Water and electricity meet at the defrost drain on this class of appliance, so dry the floor before you kneel on it. Work with the door mechanism intact rather than around it.
When this becomes a service call
Stop and call when the picture changes: the drain, the tray and the supply valve are owner territory, and anything that involves the sealed side or the liner is a service call. A technician draws the same line, for the same reasons. Bring somebody in straight away if the breaker trips when the cabinet starts; repeated tripping is the appliance telling you something has already failed.
