The quick verdict
On a Comfort Time refrigerator the gasket and the alignment are one problem wearing two hats. A door that has dropped meets the seal unevenly, and cleaning a seal that is being held crooked achieves nothing at all. The checks are ordered so the cheap ones eliminate the expensive ones.
How it presents
- The door opens under its own weight instead of staying shut — Either the cabinet is leaning forward or the gasket has lost the magnetic grip that used to hold the last inch closed. Do it with the machine in its normal state rather than after you have already changed something.
- The door rebounds slightly instead of settling closed — A seal with no grip left, or a cabinet levelled too far forward to help. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.

What causes it, in order of likelihood
- A blocked or frozen defrost drain wetting the seal line — Water that cannot leave the cabinet finds the lowest point, and on some layouts that is the bottom of the door channel, where it freezes and holds the door open. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A gasket out of its retaining channel — Common at corners after cleaning, and it leaves a visible gap that no amount of adjustment elsewhere will close. It belongs in the order here because the check for it is cheap and the answer is unambiguous.
- Mould and staining stiffening the folds — The growth itself is harmless to the seal, but the cleaning it needs is often the fix as well. Compare it with how the machine behaved a month ago rather than with how you expect it to behave.
- Shelving inside preventing the door closing fully — A bottle or a shelf standing proud holds the door a fraction open, which is a loading fault wearing a seal costume. It is placed here on how often it turns up, not on how serious it would be.

- Empty the door bins and try again — Loading is free to rule out and it explains a surprising share of door complaints, so do it before you go anywhere near a hinge. Eliminate it properly before moving down; a half-checked cause comes back later.
- Feel along the seal for a cold draught with the machine running — The back of a hand is a sensitive enough instrument for this. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.
