Causes, most likely first
- Supply problem: marginal outlet, extension lead or a shared circuit — Ranked first: Electronic controls are sensitive to voltage sag in a way that mechanical controls never were, and an extension lead is a common culprit. - Ask what changed just before the fault appeared — A move, a power cut or a new installation nearby accounts for a large share of sudden cold-appliance faults.

Power off at the breaker or at the plug first. A capacitor keeps a charge after the power is off, so treat the compressor terminals as energised until you have proved otherwise. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an homeowner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
