The common version of this fault on a Comfort Time refrigerator is ice quietly closing off the evaporator, not a compressor that has given up. Two of the first three checks need no tools at all, and the one that does need tools is the one that ends in a service call. The signs, and the near misses
- Food at the front of the shelves spoils before food at the back — A temperature gradient across the unit means circulation, not refrigeration capacity.
- The rear panel of the refrigerator is hot to the touch and stays hot — The system is rejecting heat continuously because it never satisfies the set point.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice maker has stopped — If shelf temperature is still correct, this is an ice-production fault and belongs on that page instead.
- Condensation collects on shelves and on the inside of the door — Warm humid air is getting in or cold air is not reaching the seal line.

- Airflow blocked by a frosted-over evaporator — Ranked first: The defrost cycle on these cabinets tends to stall long before it fails outright, so ice accumulates over weeks and the owner notices warmth rather than frost. - Condenser coil blanketed in dust and lint — Second: Age and dust do this on their own; the coil is also the cheapest thing in the chain to put right.
- Thermistor or control board misreading cabinet temperature — Third: Generic control boards on this class of cabinet are the part most likely to have been changed already, and a mismatched replacement mis-scales the sensor curve.
Working through it
- Ask what changed just before the problem appeared — A move, a power cut or a new installation nearby accounts for a large share of sudden cold-appliance faults.
- Put a thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf overnight — A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below; a stable reading above that is the number a technician will want.
- Listen at the freezer compartment for the circulation fan — Open the freezer door and hold the door switch in; a fan you cannot hear separates the two likeliest causes before any tool comes out.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and keep it unplugged while your hands are behind the rear cover: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the sealed system alone entirely — the tubing carries refrigerant under pressure and needs recovery equipment, not hand tools. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
Where the owner job ends
Call as soon as the compressor is running continuously and the unit is still warm after the airflow checks are clean: continuous running on a losing battle is what turns a cheap fault into an expensive one. Everything in front of it is owner work; anything behind it, and anything involving refrigerant, needs a licensed technician with recovery equipment and gauges. If two owner-side fixes have each worked briefly, stop repeating them: something upstream is driving the problem and it needs finding.
