Start here
Before any part is replaced, the three inputs get checked in order — supply, temperature and the control arm — because each one produces an identical empty bin. That puts the shut-off arm or the ice maker switch is off at the top of the list here and a freezer that is not cold enough to harvest at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- The bin is empty and the maker never fills — No water arriving. The fault is upstream of the ice maker itself.
- The bin fills with a single frozen mass — Melting and refreezing — usually a door or a temperature problem.
- NEAR MISS — ice tastes stale but production is normal — That is filter and storage territory rather than a fault.
The causes, ordered
- The shut-off arm or the ice maker switch is off — First because it is free to check and it explains a real share of these calls — the arm is knocked up by a bag of frozen food and the machine stops obediently. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- A door that is not sealing — Warm air into a freezer makes ice that partly melts and refreezes into a block, which reads as an ice-maker fault and is a door fault. A thin magnetic gasket on a light door is the part that decides whether a compact unit holds anything at all.
- A bin switch or paddle blocked by ice — A clump of ice against the paddle stops the maker as effectively as switching it off. Ranked high because a small cabinet is easy to overfill, and an overfilled compact unit blocks its own return air before anything fails.
- A freezer that is not cold enough to harvest — The mould has to reach a harvest temperature before the cycle completes. A freezer running warm makes soft ice, slow ice or no ice at all.
What to check first, second, third
- Look for a clump of ice against the bin paddle — It stops the maker and it is cleared by hand in seconds.
- Check the shut-off arm is down and free to move — A stacked bin or a bag of food holding it up stops production completely.
- Compare cube size across a full bin — Consistently small or hollow cubes point at the fill rather than the mechanism.
Step by step, as far as it is safe to go
- Empty the bin, free the shut-off arm and leave the appliance to run for a day — A full day of normal running is the only honest test of an ice maker.
- Check the supply line behind the appliance is not kinked or pinched — Pushing the cabinet back against the line is the usual cause of a slow fill.
- STOP before removing the ice maker or testing its terminals — The module, the mould heater and the fill valve are metered tests on live terminals behind a panel.
Before you open anything
Safety
Kill the power at the plug or breaker before any panel comes off, and do not use flame or a heat gun anywhere near the fill tube — a hair dryer on a low setting is as aggressive as this job ever needs to get. Stored charge stays in the machine after the supply is gone.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call when the arm is free, the freezer is at temperature and a full day still produces no ice. Valves, fill tubes and the maker itself are technician work, and a water line under pressure deserves respect.
