Noise is a location problem before it is a parts problem. That puts the unit is not level or not sitting still at the top of the list here and the defrost cycle running at the bottom.
What you observe
- A buzz or rattle that changes when you press on the cabinet — Contact noise. Something is resting against a panel, a tube or the floor, and pressure moves it.
- A whirring or chirping that stops when the door opens — The evaporator fan is switched by the door.
- A vibration felt through the floor rather than heard — A cabinet transmitting through a suspended floor, which is a levelling question.
- NEAR MISS — a squeal that appears only when the door is opened — That is a hinge, not a running part, and it takes a drop of lubricant rather than a service call.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- The unit is not level or not sitting still — A cabinet on uneven feet rocks on its own vibration. How the unit was put in is part of the machine, and a bad install follows it for its whole life.
- A damper motor stepping — A small repeating click from inside the cabinet as the air flap moves. It leads here because the display is where this line announces its own faults, and reading it first saves dismantling something that was never wrong.
- The evaporator fan or its blade catching ice — Behind the freezer rear panel. Air distribution decides what the owner feels, so a blocked path outranks the components behind it.
- The defrost cycle running — Sizzling and dripping during defrost is normal, and it happens a few times a day.
What to check first, second, third
- Open the door and hold the light switch in — Any sound that stops with the door is on a door-switched circuit — in practice the evaporator fan.
- Rock the cabinet gently with a hand on each front corner — Movement means the feet are the amplifier, whatever else is going on.
- Switch the ice maker off and leave it a day — A free, zero-risk way to remove the single most misread source of intermittent noise.
Step by step, as far as it is safe to go
- Pull the unit out and look behind and underneath — Find the drip tray, the drain line and the tubing, and make sure nothing is resting against a panel or the wall.

- Clean the condenser area and the fan guard — Anything loose in that compartment eventually finds the fan blade. Do this unplugged.
Tools: vacuum, soft brush
- Isolate the ice maker for a day — Switch it off or lift its arm, then listen again.
- STOP before removing the freezer rear panel — Getting to the evaporator fan means a panel, live terminals behind it and a fan that will run in your hand.
Before you open anything
Safety
Never reach behind a rear panel to stop a fan or to feel for a rub with the unit plugged in. Kill the power at the plug or the breaker first, and remember that stored charge stays in the machine after the supply is gone.
When to call a technician
Call when the sound comes from behind the freezer rear panel or from the compressor and it is loud enough to bother you — both mean a panel, a meter and a fan that runs in your hand.
