The answer first
Almost every door complaint resolves to one of three things — the gasket has taken a set, the door has dropped, or the cabinet is not level. All three are owner-checkable. That puts a gasket that has taken a set or lost its magnet at the top of the list here and a dropped or misaligned door at the bottom.
What owners actually report
- The door feels harder to open than it used to — Usually normal: a cabinet just closed holds a slight vacuum for a few seconds.
- Water droplets along the inside of the door frame — Condensation at the point the gasket has stopped touching.
- NEAR MISS — water pooling inside the base of the cabinet — That is usually a blocked defrost drain rather than a door fault, and it belongs on the leak page.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- A gasket that has taken a set or lost its magnet — The commonest cause by a distance. A gasket squashed flat on one section stops touching there, and the cabinet loses cold at that point all day. Built-in doors are heavy and are hung on adjustable hinges, so a door that has dropped is a real cause on this line and not a throwaway check.
- A gasket lifting out of its retaining channel — Cleaning and door slams work the edge of the gasket loose, and once it lifts, that section never touches again. A seal fault never announces itself — it just costs temperature all day — which is why it is checked early despite being unglamorous.
- Humidity the cabinet was never designed for — In a humid garage or an unconditioned room, condensation appears on a perfectly good seal. The fix is the room, not the door. The surroundings are part of the machine: rate it against warmer air and the same hardware behaves like a failing unit.
- A dropped or misaligned door — Heavy doors, loaded bins and years of use let the door settle.
What to check first, second, third
- The paper test, all the way round the frame — Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull.
- Look at the gasket where it meets the hinge side — The channel usually lets go at a corner, and it is visible once you look for it.
- Watch the door close from the side, at eye level — A door that meets the frame unevenly is a hinge or levelling problem.
Step by step, as far as it is safe to go
- Clear the door bins and drawers that foul the swing — Pull out anything tall in the door, reseat every drawer and shelf, then try the door again.
- Press the gasket back into its channel all the way round — Work from one corner to the next; a lifted section often refits by hand.
- STOP before loosening hinge bolts to realign a loaded door — A heavy door on a slackened hinge falls, and it takes the frame with it. That adjustment is worth a technician.

Empty the door before touching a hinge, because a loaded door has enough weight to injure a hand and enough leverage to bend a frame. Kill the power before working near a switch, and remember that stored charge remains in the machine after the supply is gone.
When this stops being a home repair
Call when the gasket is split or has lost its magnetic grip, when the door needs hinge adjustment, or when the seal is proved good and the cabinet is still losing temperature. A cabinet sitting above 40 °F (4 °C) because of a door fault is a food-safety issue, not a cosmetic one.
