Before a control board is condemned, two cheaper explanations have to be eliminated: a mode the unit was left in, and a sensor that is lying to it. That puts a lock, demo or showroom mode at the top of the list here and a defrost sensor or bimetal reporting wrongly at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- A code or a symbol on the display that the manual does not explain — Most cabinets show a short code for a sensed condition. It names a circuit, not a verdict.
- Buttons do nothing, or the panel is locked — A control lock is a feature on most units and it is engaged by accident constantly.
- The display dims or brightens on its own — A power-saving or showroom feature on many cabinets.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and the panel is fine — Treat it as a cooling fault; the control is reporting honestly.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- A lock, demo or showroom mode — Every modern cabinet has at least one. It leads here because the display is where this line announces its own faults, and reading it first saves dismantling something that was never wrong.
- A damper motor that has lost position — One compartment then runs to its own rules regardless of what the panel is set to. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- A temperature sensor that has drifted — A sensor that reads warm makes the unit run forever; one that reads cold makes it stop early. Ranked next because the boards act on what the sensors report: a sensor reading wrongly produces behaviour that looks like a failed component somewhere else entirely.
- A defrost sensor or bimetal reporting wrongly — It makes the machine skip or shorten defrost, and the first visible sign is a code rather than ice.
Where to start, and what each check rules out
- Write the code down exactly as shown — Digits, letters and the order matter, and the code is the fastest thing a technician can act on before arriving.
- Compare both compartments against thermometers — A single compartment disagreeing points at its damper or its sensor.
- Note whether the code appears at the same time each day — A code tied to the defrost cycle names the system before anyone opens anything.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Clear any lock and exit demo mode — Work through the panel sequences for your unit before anything else.
- Check the door alarm behaves correctly with each door — It tests both switches without any tools at all.
- STOP before opening the control housing — Sensors and boards are tested with a meter on live terminals behind a panel. That is where an owner check ends.

Control housings sit next to mains wiring. Kill the power at the breaker before opening one, and never probe a live board with the cabinet plugged in.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call when a code survives a clean power-down, when one compartment ignores its setting, or when the panel and a thermometer disagree. All three need a meter behind a panel.
