This page names the problems that actually occur on a standalone freezer, tells you how to recognise each, and points at the page that covers it. The diagnostic work lives on those pages rather than here. Every step below removes a whole class of fault rather than a single part. Start at the cheapest check and work down.
The problem classes and how to recognise them
- A new tick, buzz or drumming — Levelling, panels or a fan against frost. See the noise page.
- An alarm that will not clear, or a display that disagrees with a thermometer — Control and sensor issues. See the control-fault page.
- No ice or malformed cubes on a plumbed cabinet — Supply and harvest. See the ice-production page.
- Food softening while the cabinet still runs — A capacity or airflow loss. See the cooling-failure page.
What is usually behind it, in order
- Capacity and airflow loss — Most likely here. On a cabinet of this class the capacity group leads, and within it the defrost system rather than anything on the sealed side. Blocked condensers, tight clearance, frosted coils and packed loads. The largest class on any standalone cabinet.
- Closure and seal faults — Next most likely. Alignment, load against the rim and gaskets that have lost their set.
- Drainage and leaks — Third in the order. Blocked defrost drains and displaced evaporation trays, with plumbing faults on cabinets that have an ice maker.
- Control, sensor and alarm issues — Then this one. Drifted sensors and latched alarms, which matter more here than on a refrigerator because the load is at stake.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work.
Where owner work ends
Anything on the sealed system is a service call from the start, as is a scorched cord, a tripping breaker or a leaking pressurised fitting. Clearance, condenser cleaning, seals, levelling, load arrangement and drain clearing are all owner work, and between them they resolve most of the complaints on this list. If the fault is intermittent, write down when it happens before you call.
