Noise complaints on a freezer split into vibration and contact. Vibration is levelling, mountings and panels; contact is a fan against ice, and a fan against ice is telling you about the defrost system. The hardware on this kind of appliance rarely surprises anyone; the supervision around it is where the ambiguity lives. Work from the cheapest check to the most expensive one and the sealed system stays where it belongs, at the end.
The observable signs
- A hum through the floor in the room next door — A cabinet coupling into a joist, which is a levelling and isolation problem.
- A rhythmic tick or scrape from inside an upright — A fan blade catching frost on the coil shroud.
- A buzz that changes when the cabinet is touched — Panel resonance, not a component fault.
- NEAR MISS: noise alongside softening food — Then the noise is secondary and the cooling failure is the page you want.
Most likely first
- Fan blade contacting frost — The one to suspect first. It leads on a cabinet of this class because the fan runs at low speed for long periods, where the first contact with frost is easy to miss. A regular tick that tracks the fan rather than the compressor. It also means ice has reached somewhere it should not be.
- Cabinet standing unlevel or on an uneven floor — The second suspect. The commonest source of freezer noise by a wide margin, because these cabinets are heavy and usually stand on a hard floor in a hard-walled room.
- Loose panel, basket or lid stay — Third, and less common. Resonance from a large flat surface. It stops under a flat hand, which is the entire test.
- Compressor mounting rubber hardened with age — Fourth, and less common again. Turns a perfectly healthy compressor into a machine that sounds like it is failing.

What to check first, and why that first
- Open the door or lid while the noise is happening — A noise that stops instantly belongs to a fan behind that opening.

- Rock the cabinet gently at each corner — Any movement at all is a levelling fault and a likely cause.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach into a fan guard while the cabinet has power, and never hold a door switch closed to observe a fan running with the door open.

Call when the noise tracks the compressor rather than a fan or a panel, when it arrives with a loss of holding temperature, or when a full defrost silences it and the noise returns within weeks.
