The compressor keeps working and the cabinet keeps warming.
- Door or lid seal leaking — Second. Humid air entering continuously loads the cabinet, frosts the coil and drives run time up.
- Condenser coil blocked or starved of clearance — Third. A freezer pushed against a wall or standing in a dusty garage cannot shed heat, and capacity falls away gradually until the load notices.
- Evaporator or condenser fan stopped — Fourth. On a frost-free upright this halts distribution immediately; on a chest cabinet a stopped condenser fan shows up as a hot compressor compartment.

The diagnostic order
- Check the clearance and the condenser — A cabinet boxed in by stored goods is a cabinet that cannot shed heat.
- Run the paper test around the door or lid at several points — A lid seal that fails at one corner will frost the cabinet and empty its capacity.
- Look for frost across the interior back wall of an upright — Frost sheeting on the coil is the airflow answer.

What you can do now
- Clear the space around the cabinet and vacuum the condenser — Do this first, because it is free and it explains gradual failures on its own.
