The short answer

- Water on the floor at the front of the machine
- A damp patch under one side that reappears after drying
- Water only during the wash, not the fill

- Overfilling or excess suds — Why here: the wrong detergent produces a foam that walks straight out of the door and looks exactly like a seal failure — Confirmed by: suds visible at the door, usually after hand detergent was used by mistake
- Supply or drain hose connection weeping — Why here: ranks here because it is behind the machine, it is slow, and it is often mistaken for a door leak once the water tracks forward — Confirmed by: a wet fitting or a corrosion trail at the inlet or the waste connection
- Machine not level, so water sits at one corner — Why here: a level machine holds its water where the door can seal it, and correcting it is free — Confirmed by: the leak is always at the same corner and a level shows the cabinet leaning that way
- Door gasket dirty, displaced or worn — Why here: first because water at the front is most often water that escaped past the door, and the gasket is inspectable in a minute — Confirmed by: water at the front centre, and a gasket with a hard section, a gap or trapped debris
- Tub, sump seal or pump seal failing — Why here: last: water arriving from under the middle of the machine rather than the door is the only pattern that points here, and it is a technician job — Confirmed by: a wet trail from the centre underside, with a dry door gasket and dry hose fittings
Check in this order
- Dry the floor and lay paper down, then run a cycle and watch — Because: seeing where the first water arrives eliminates most of the list immediately
- Inspect the door gasket all round with the door open — Because: the door is the most common source and needs no tools
- Check what detergent has been used — Because: a suds leak is not a fault and is instantly reversible
- Pull the machine out and look at the hose connections and the underside — Because: it separates an installation leak from a tub or pump leak

- Dry the floor completely and lay sheets of paper across the front and both sides — Tools: towels, paper — Time: a few minutes
- Run a short cycle and watch the paper — note whether the first water shows at the door, a corner, or the middle of the underside — Tools: none — Time: roughly half an hour

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off at the isolation valve before touching a hose or a fitting. Water and a live cabinet are the two hazards here and they sit next to each other. A wash cycle heats the water well above what is safe to touch. Let the machine stand after a cycle before reaching into the tub.
