The short answer
A dishwasher that will not heat cleans badly and dries worse, and the fault is usually upstream of the machine — in the water it is given — rather than in the heater itself. Likely causes, most likely first
- Scale on the heating element — Why here: scale insulates the element from the water, so a hard-water machine loses heating performance gradually and invisibly — Confirmed by: a chalky crust on the element and the tub, in an area with hard water
- Incoming water arriving cold — Why here: first because the machine is designed to be fed hot water and a long or cold supply run undoes everything downstream of it — Confirmed by: the tap nearest the machine runs cold for a long time before it warms
- Rinse aid empty, so nothing sheets off the load — Why here: ranks high on a wet-load complaint because drying depends far more on rinse aid than owners expect — Confirmed by: water beading and standing on plastics, and an empty rinse-aid reservoir
- Heater, thermostat or high-limit failed — Why here: last because it is the only cause here needing a technician, and because everything above imitates it — Confirmed by: a hot supply, a normal cycle, a clean element and still a cold load
- Short or economy cycle selected — Why here: not a fault at all: an eco or quick cycle deliberately runs cooler and longer or cooler and shorter, and it is the most common explanation for a sudden change — Confirmed by: the cycle that changed behaviour is a different one from the cycle in habitual use
Check in this order
- Run the nearest hot tap and time how long it takes to get hot — Because: a machine fed cold water cannot heat its way out of it on a normal cycle
- Check which cycle is actually being used — Because: an eco or quick cycle explains most sudden changes and needs no repair
- Check the rinse-aid reservoir — Because: a wet load is far more often a rinse-aid problem than a heating problem
- Look at the element and the tub for scale — Because: it is the last owner-visible cause before the heater itself is in question
Owner checks, in order
- Run the hot tap closest to the machine until it is hot, then start the cycle immediately — Tools: none — Time: a few minutes
- Select the machine normal or heavy cycle rather than an eco or quick programme and re-run a full load — Tools: none — Time: an hour or more

- At the end of a full cycle, open the door and feel the load and the tub wall to judge whether heat was produced at all — Tools: none — Time: a couple of minutes
- Stop condition: Stop before any test that would put a meter on live terminals.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off at the isolation valve before touching a hose or a fitting. Water and a live cabinet are the two hazards here and they sit next to each other. A wash cycle heats the water well above what is safe to touch. Let the machine stand after a cycle before reaching into the tub.
