Likely causes, most likely first
- Spray arms blocked, or their rotation obstructed by the load — Why here: first because water that never reaches an item cannot clean it, and this is the single most common finding on a poor-wash complaint — Confirmed by: holes in the arm blocked with debris, or an arm that will not spin freely by hand with the racks in place
- Filter or scrap screen loaded — Why here: a loaded filter recirculates the soil it just removed, so the machine effectively washes with dirty water — Confirmed by: visible debris in the filter, and a wash that smells of old food
- Wash temperature not being reached — Why here: detergent needs heat to work at all, so a machine washing cool cleans poorly however good everything else is — Confirmed by: the cycle finishes quickly, the load is barely warm, and greasy items are worst affected
- Detergent or rinse aid wrong, stale or not being delivered — Why here: chemistry is as important as water here, and a dispenser that does not open wastes an entire cycle — Confirmed by: detergent still sitting in a closed dispenser at the end of the cycle, or a film on everything
- Water hardness or scale on the machine — Why here: last of the routine causes: scale changes both the water and the heater, and it builds slowly enough that owners do not connect it — Confirmed by: a chalky film on the tub and heater, and glassware that has gone permanently cloudy
Check in this order
- Spin both spray arms by hand and look through their holes — Because: water delivery is the first requirement and it takes seconds to check
- Pull and clean the filter and scrap screen — Because: a loaded filter undoes everything the machine does afterwards
- Run a cycle and feel whether the load comes out hot — Because: it separates a chemistry problem from a temperature problem
- Watch whether the detergent dispenser opens and empties — Because: it is the last free check before the machine itself is in question
Owner checks, in order
- Pull the lower rack, spin each spray arm by hand and clear any blocked holes with a wooden toothpick — Tools: a toothpick, a cloth — Time: a few minutes
- Remove the filter assembly and scrap screen, wash them under a running tap with a soft brush, and refit them fully seated — Tools: a soft brush — Time: roughly half an hour

- Stop condition: Stop before any test that would put a meter on live terminals.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off at the isolation valve before touching a hose or a fitting. Water and a live cabinet are the two hazards here and they sit next to each other. A wash cycle heats the water well above what is safe to touch. Let the machine stand after a cycle before reaching into the tub.
