Bosch Washer E17: Slow Fill — Water Entering Below Minimum Flow Rate
E17 on Bosch washers means water is entering the machine, but the flow rate is below the minimum required to fill the tub within the cycle's allotted fill time. Unlike E13 (no water or near-zero flow), E17 confirms that some water is flowing — just not enough. The machine may attempt to continue the cycle with a reduced water level, or it may abandon the cycle entirely depending on how far below the threshold the flow falls.
Causes Unique to E17 (vs E13)
Because E17 specifically indicates partial flow rather than complete blockage, the causes skew toward restrictions rather than complete failures:
Partially clogged inlet screens: Screens with 50-80% blockage still pass water, but at reduced rate. E13 triggers at near-complete blockage; E17 triggers at partial restriction.
Low house water pressure: Municipal supply pressure varies by time of day and season. Summer irrigation demand drops pressure in many Sacramento neighborhoods below the 20 PSI minimum Bosch requires. E17 that appears only during summer afternoons or when sprinklers are running points to pressure competition.
Partially closed supply valve: A ball valve that is 30-60 degrees from fully open looks almost correct visually but reduces flow significantly. Gate valves with internal corrosion restrict flow even when the handle is fully open — the corroded gate does not retract completely.
Kinked supply hose: A supply hose with a kink that does not completely close the passage restricts flow without blocking it entirely. Check behind the machine where hoses bend.
AquaStop hose partial restriction: The AquaStop mechanical valve can partially close due to vibration or minor leak events, reducing flow without completely blocking it.

Systematic Flow Rate Testing
- Close both supply valves behind the machine
- Disconnect the cold supply hose from the machine
- Hold the hose end in a bucket
- Open the cold valve fully
- Time how long to fill 1 gallon:
- Under 20 seconds: Good flow. Problem is inside the machine
- 20-45 seconds: Marginal. Could cause E17 on faster fill cycles
- Over 45 seconds: Insufficient. Supply-side restriction
- Repeat with the hot supply hose
Internal Restriction Diagnosis
If supply pressure is adequate but E17 persists:
Inlet valve partially stuck: The valve plunger can corrode or accumulate mineral deposits, preventing it from opening fully even when energized. The solenoid measures good resistance but the mechanical plunger is restricted. Replace the valve assembly.
Flow sensor contamination: On EcoSilence models with flow sensors, mineral scale on the sensor turbine blades causes the sensor to underreport flow. The actual flow may be adequate but the sensor tells the board it is low. Clean the sensor or replace it.
Pressure switch tube obstruction: The small-diameter tube connecting the tub to the pressure switch can accumulate mineral deposits or detergent residue, reducing the accuracy of the level reading. Disconnect and blow through the tube — clear any obstruction.
