Bosch Washer E04: AquaStop Leak Protection — Water in Base Pan
E04 on a Bosch washer is the AquaStop activation code — the float switch in the machine's base pan detected standing water. Similar to E15 on Bosch dishwashers, E04 means water reached a location it should never be. The machine immediately stops the cycle, locks the door, and activates the drain pump to remove as much water as possible.
Bosch Washer AquaStop vs Dishwasher AquaStop
Both use the same multi-layer philosophy, but the washer system handles higher water volumes and pressures:
- Double-wall supply hose: Standard on all Bosch washers. Inner burst is contained in outer tube
- Electromagnetic supply valve: Unlike the dishwasher's spring-loaded mechanical valve, the washer's AquaStop valve is electrically controlled and can be tested
- Base pan float switch: Polystyrene float triggers at approximately 10mm of water accumulation
- Door seal (boot gasket): The large rubber bellows around the door opening is the washer-specific component most likely to leak

Locating the Leak Source
Most Common Washer Leak Sources
Door boot gasket (60% of washer leaks): The large rubber bellows between the tub and door frame flexes with every door open/close and every spin cycle vibration. After 5-8 years, the rubber develops cracks, tears, or loses its sealing surface. Small foreign objects (coins, buttons, underwire) trapped in the boot gasket crease can puncture it.
Check by running a wash cycle with the machine pulled forward and watching the boot gasket area with a flashlight. Water dripping from the bottom edge of the boot confirms a leak.
Tub-to-pump hose connections: The rubber hoses connecting the tub to the drain pump and recirculation pump are secured with spring clamps. These clamps lose tension over time, allowing slow drips at connections.
Detergent dispenser tray overflow: Overloading detergent or a clogged dispenser siphon causes water to overflow the tray and run down the front panel interior into the base pan. Remove the dispenser drawer and check for residue buildup in the siphon tube.
Tub bearing seal: The bearing seal where the drum shaft passes through the rear tub wall can fail, allowing wash water to seep along the shaft. This leak is visible as water streaking from the center of the rear tub toward the bottom. This is the most expensive repair — tub bearing replacement on Bosch washers costs $350-$550 in parts alone.
Resetting E04
- Power off and unplug
- Tilt the machine backward slightly (have someone hold it) to drain water from the base pan
- Use towels to absorb remaining water in the pan
- Plug in and power on
- If the float switch dropped, E04 clears and the machine allows a cycle start
- Monitor the next cycle for leaks — if E04 returns, the leak source is active and must be fixed
