The short answer for these models
A refrigerator that hums away without getting cold has almost always stopped delivering cold air rather than stopped making it. Frost over the evaporator, a door that is no longer sealing and a condenser smothered in dust account for most of these, and all three are visible without a meter. The sealed system is the expensive answer and also the least likely one. On the BDA refrigerators the brand-level answer holds and the order does not: a plumbed cabinet has a second source of water and a second thing to fail, and a page that ignores which one you have sends you looking in the wrong place, so the water-path checks come before the rest on these models.
What you actually see
- How your BDA unit is built — the check that comes before the list — Check the back for a supply line. Fitted, and a leak has two possible sources; absent, and there is only one.
- The compressor runs and never cycles off — A unit that never reaches its set point never stops trying, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The door has to be pushed to shut, or it swings back open — A door held open by a shelf, a bottle or a tired hinge behaves exactly like a cooling fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- A condenser that cannot shed its heat — Dust on the coil, or a cabinet pushed back against a wall, traps the heat the machine is trying to throw away, and the cooling falls off in proportion. The ranking moves here for a reason particular to these models: how the unit is built changes what this finding means. That is what puts the water-path checks ahead of everything else on the list.
- The sealed system or the compressor — Bottom of the list on purpose: it is the rarest of the five, the most expensive, and the only one that is not an owner check at any stage.
The order the checks belong in
- First — shut the door on a strip of paper and pull — The paper test costs nothing and settles the cheapest cause before you move anything heavy.
- Second — set the control to its coldest and listen for the change — A control that produces no change in behaviour at either extreme has told you something the first three checks could not. On these models this is the step the construction changes: what you found at the step above decides how much weight to give what you find here.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Defrost with time and open doors, never with a blade or a heat gun, because the evaporator tubing sits directly behind the ice. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below, so move anything perishable to a cooler while you work rather than gambling on it.
Where the owner job ends
The line is the panel and the refrigerant circuit. Everything in front of them is yours; everything behind them needs a technician. Book the visit once the cheap causes are excluded, and book it immediately if the compressor is running hot enough to smell or the cabinet has not dropped a degree in a day.
