The short answer
Noise is one of the few faults where listening carefully costs nothing and narrows the field almost completely. Where the sound comes from — freezer, back, base — matters more than what it sounds like. On the BTRFBC models the sounds worth separating are the fan noises from the compressor noises, because the two sit at opposite ends of the cabinet and the access to each is completely different.
What the noise sounds like
- A knock or thump from low down at the back — A thump from low at the back, repeating in time with the compressor, is the one sound on this page that should not be left for months.
- A squeal or chirp from the freezer side — High-pitched noise from inside the insulated box usually means a fan blade meeting ice or a bearing running dry.
- Gurgling or a sound like running water — Gurgling and trickling are the machine working. They are most noticeable at night and most alarming to new owners.
- Popping or cracking after a defrost — Plastic and metal expanding and contracting as temperatures change. Ordinary, and loudest on a new or recently defrosted machine.

- The condenser fan at the back or under the base — A worn condenser fan bearing gives a steady grind or whirr that rises with the compressor and never changes when a door is opened. This ranks first on the BTRFBC models because it accounts for more complaints than everything below it put together. - The cabinet itself vibrating against floor, wall or contents — Bottles, trays and drip pans resonate. A large proportion of rattle complaints are solved by moving something, levelling a foot or pulling the machine forward.
- The evaporator fan inside the freezer — This is the fan that pushes cold air around the cabinet. Its blade catches frost easily, and a blade striking ice produces the chirp, the ticking or the squeal that owners most often report.
- A loose drain pan or a defrost drain that is running noisily — It is worth checking early precisely because it looks like a serious intermittent fault and is not one.
Check in this order, and why
- First — pull the base grille or rear cover and look at the condenser fan — Unplug the machine, take off the base grille or rear cover, and look for dust, hair or a stray object at the blade. Spin it by hand and feel for roughness.
- Second — rock the cabinet and clear what is touching it — Rock the cabinet by a corner and listen. A machine that moves at all is a machine that can rattle against whatever is next to it.
- Third — open the freezer while the noise is happening — If the sound stops or changes the instant the door opens, it is the evaporator fan: the door switch has just cut its power. That one test separates the inside of the cabinet from the outside.
- Fourth — reach the drain pan above the compressor and reseat it — With the power off, look under the back for the pan above the compressor and make sure it is clipped in and not touching the chassis.

Power off before panels come off. A refrigerator is heavy and unstable with the door open, so have help before you move it to reach the back, and keep fingers clear of both fan blades even when you believe the power is off.
Where the owner job ends
The line is the inner panel. Levelling, clearing, vacuuming and switching the ice maker off are owner jobs; removing the freezer rear panel to reach a fan motor is not, because it is done with the machine live and the tubing behind it is unforgiving.
