The short answer
A BESTEK thermoelectric cooler that is not getting cold is very often working exactly as designed in a room that is too warm for it, or running on a supply that cannot deliver its full power. Check the room, the supply and the fan before concluding anything is broken. This type of cooler is not a food refrigerator and should not be relied on as one.
What you observe
- The cabinet is cooler than the room but never cold — Normal behaviour for this technology, particularly in warm weather.
- It cooled well in winter and poorly in summer — The clearest possible sign that ambient temperature is the limit.
- The fan is silent and the cabinet is at room temperature — A genuine failure, either of the supply or of the fan.
- NEAR MISS — it cools but water collects inside — That is a condensation and drainage issue rather than a cooling failure.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A room or vehicle that is too warm — First, and usually not a fault: the cooler can only reach a fixed difference below ambient, so a hot room or a parked car in the sun puts the interior well above refrigerator temperature.
- A supply that cannot deliver full power — Second, and specific to this class: a long or thin vehicle lead, a worn socket or an under-rated adapter drops the voltage, and the module's output falls sharply with it.
- Blocked airflow at the fins or the grille — Third. The module's hot side must be cooled by the fan; block it, and the whole assembly heat-soaks and the cold side stops working.
- A failed fan or module — Last, and easy to spot: no fan noise at all, with a cabinet at room temperature, means the appliance is not working rather than under-performing.
Check in this order, and why
- Compare the inside with the room, not with a refrigerator — A fixed difference below ambient is the design, and it tells you whether the unit is working.
- Check the supply and the lead — A thin or long lead is the most common invisible cause of weak cooling.
- Feel whether the rear fins are hot and the fan is blowing — Hot fins with airflow mean the module is working.
- Only then call it a failure — A silent fan with a warm cabinet is a genuine fault.
What an owner can safely check
- Move the cooler to a cooler, shaded place — Out of sunlight and away from other heat sources; it changes the result immediately.
About 10 min
- Use the shortest, heaviest supply lead available — Avoid thin extension leads and worn vehicle sockets entirely.
About 10 min
- Vacuum the rear fins and the fan — Work gently; bent fins block the airflow the module depends on.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 20 min
- Leave clear space all round the cabinet — The hot side must be able to dump its heat into moving air.
About 10 min
- Pre-chill the contents before loading — A thermoelectric cooler holds cold far better than it makes it.

Safety
Unplug the cooler, and disconnect it from any vehicle supply, before cleaning the fins or the fan. Do not cover the grille or run the unit in an enclosed box: the heat it removes must go somewhere, and a blocked hot side overheats the module. Do not rely on this type of cooler for food safety — a refrigerator holds food safely at forty Fahrenheit, four Celsius, or below, and these units frequently cannot.
When to call a technician
Call, or replace the unit, when the fan is silent and the cabinet stays at room temperature, or when the fins never get warm on a good supply. On a compact thermoelectric cooler the fan and module are effectively the whole appliance, so ask the price of a repair before committing to it. There is nothing to repair when the only problem is a warm room.

What this page does not cover
This page covers BESTEK compact thermoelectric coolers as a class rather than one model line, and these units are not food refrigerators. Deliberately absent here: temperature differentials, supply ratings, module and fan part identifiers and cabinet capacities, which differ by family and belong on the family or model page.
