The short answer
A BESTEK thermoelectric cooler does not make ice and cannot be made to. What owners sometimes see instead is frost building on the cold plate in a humid room, which is a condensation problem rather than a freezing one. Causes, most likely first on this brand
- The technology cannot reach freezing in an ordinary room — First, and it is a design limit rather than a fault: the cabinet sits a fixed amount below ambient, and in a normal room that is drinks temperature, not ice temperature.
- Humid air condensing on the cold plate — Second, and the reason ice appears at all: moisture from every door opening freezes onto the coldest surface, building a film that then insulates the plate.
- A door left ajar or a poor seal — Third. A light door that does not seat lets humid air in continuously, which is exactly what feeds the frost film on the plate.
- An expectation carried over from a compressor fridge — Fourth, and worth stating plainly: a compressor cabinet with a freezer box can make ice, and this appliance has neither the compressor nor the box.

- Compare the interior with the room temperature — A fixed difference below ambient tells you the unit is working as designed.
- Look at the cold plate for a frost film — That is the only ice this appliance will ever produce.
- Check the door seats fully and closes on its own — A door held ajar feeds the frost.

Before you open anything

Unplug the cooler, and disconnect it from any vehicle supply, before clearing frost or cleaning the interior. Never scrape or chip the cold plate: the thermoelectric assembly sits directly behind it. Do not cover the rear grille or run the unit in an enclosed space, because the heat it removes has to leave through moving air at the back.
When to call a technician
There is nothing to call about when the complaint is the absence of ice, because this appliance has no ice mechanism. Call, or replace the unit, if the cold plate never gets cold at all, or if the fan has stopped. On a compact thermoelectric cooler the fan and module are effectively the whole appliance, so ask the price before agreeing to any repair.
