The answer first
On the WMY line a leak is most often at the drain pump filter cover, because this platform puts the filter behind a hinged flap at the base where it is opened often and cross-threaded easily. The brand-generic page ranks the door boot first; on the models listed in the table on this page the filter cover comes first and the boot second.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- The door boot has a tear or a trapped object in its fold — Peel the fold open and look. Foreign objects live in the bottom of the boot and they are what cuts it.
- The floor is wet behind the machine — Rear water is supply side: the inlet hose washers, the tap connections or a split in the hose where it bends. It is worth knowing that the models listed in the table on this page share this layout.
- The leak is worse on a hot wash — Heat expands the tub and the hoses, so a marginal seal that holds on a cold cycle lets go at temperature.
- Water pools under the machine but the floor in front is dry — Under-cabinet water without a front puddle means the base tray is catching it — the source is higher up.
- The leak only happens on the rinse — Level-dependent leaks point at the door boot or the tub lip rather than at a hose.
- NEAR MISS — the water is coming from the sink or the standpipe — Household plumbing produces washing-machine puddles surprisingly often. Test the waste before the appliance.
- NEAR MISS — the machine will not drain and water sits in the drum — That is a drainage fault and the standing water is its symptom, not a leak. The drainage page covers it.
The causes, ranked
- A filter cover that is not sealing — Ranked first on this platform. Its rubber seal also perishes and its threads collect fibre. Both produce a weep at the base flap that looks far more serious than it is. This is where the WMY line differs from the brand’s other lines.
- A split or loose inlet hose — Second, and common. Hoses harden with age and split where they bend behind the cabinet. The washers inside the couplings flatten and weep at the tap.
- A door glass seal that has been distorted by heat — Third in the order. Heat-hardened rubber leaks at high fill levels and seals at low ones. The WMY line behaves the same way here from one model to the next.
- A blocked or overdosed detergent drawer — Less common than the three above. Detergent build-up in the housing is the commonest cause of water at the drawer face, and it is cured with a brush and hot water.
- A cracked detergent drawer housing — Uncommon here. Housing cracks leak during fill only and they never show at the drawer face, which sends owners looking in the wrong place.
Working through it in order
- Open and reseat the drain filter — The filter cover is both the commonest cause and the fastest test; do it before anything else.
- Pull the machine out and leave it out for a cycle — If the leak stops with the machine forward, a strained hose is the cause and the fix is clearance. That much is common to the whole WMY line.
- Look under the cabinet with a torch during a drain — The pump-out is the highest-pressure moment in the cycle and it is when a drain-side leak shows itself.
- Run a cycle with no load and a half dose — An empty-machine test separates habits from faults in one cycle.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, then shut the water off. Never run a cycle with a panel removed, and leave the door lock exactly as it is: it keeps the drum shut while it spins and that is its whole purpose.
