What is actually going on
On the WMY line an unfinished programme is a timeout rather than a breakdown, and on the models listed in the table on this page each phase has its own allowance. Which allowance was exceeded is the whole diagnosis, and it is visible from the phase the machine stops in.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- The machine repeats the rinse over and over — Repeated rinsing is the suds signature and it is a dosing problem.
- The machine pauses for long periods with no activity — Wait a full cycle length before calling a long pause a fault. On the models listed in the table on this page the access for this is the same across the line.
- The machine stops at the same point in every cycle — A repeatable stop is a condition being failed repeatedly, and it is far easier to diagnose than an intermittent one.
- The countdown sticks at a particular figure — A stuck countdown is a wait rather than a crash.
- The cycle time jumps up by an hour or more — The control has extended the phase because a condition is marginal — usually fill rate or heating.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor mid-cycle — A leak that reaches the base tray can halt a cycle; the leak is the fault.
- NEAR MISS — the programme really is that long — Long is not the same as stuck. Read the programme length first.
The causes, ranked
- A heating circuit or sensor fault — First, and by a distance. The element, its thermal cut-out or the temperature sensor: all three present as a wash that never gets hot. Owners of the models listed in the table on this page describe this in almost identical words.
- A restricted drain path causing a timeout — Second, and common. A partly blocked filter drains slowly enough to pass some cycles and fail others, which is why this fault looks intermittent.
- An unbalanced load stopping the spin — Then this one. Balance is checked before every spin ramp. A load the machine cannot distribute costs it the spin and sometimes the cycle. On the WMY line this is the part that is reachable first.
- Excess foam forcing repeated rinses — Fourth, and getting rarer. Over-dosing is the single commonest cause of a cycle that will not end.
- A door lock releasing mid-cycle — Near the bottom of the list. Vibration-sensitive locks produce pauses that look like control faults.
The order to check in
- Check and clean the drain filter — A partial restriction is the classic cause of an intermittent timeout, and the filter is where it lives.
- Check the taps and the inlet filters — A slow fill extends and then aborts a cycle, and a silted inlet filter is a common cause of it. What separates the WMY line here is the order, not the parts.
- Feel the door glass part way through a hot wash — A hot programme should warm the glass noticeably. A cold glass at the heat step points at the heating circuit.
- Run a rinse and spin on its own — This exercises the drain and the spin without the heat or the long wash, and it isolates half the causes.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate the machine and close both taps before anything is opened. Expect water at every hose and every filter, and work cold — a filter opened after a hot wash empties near-boiling water onto your hands.

When to stop and book a visit
Book a visit if the wash never heats on any programme, because a failed element also risks tripping the circuit, and if the drum thumps hard enough to move the cabinet even with a light load.
