Causes, most likely first on this family
- Stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — First on a single-evaporator freezer: there is no alternative cooling path, so ice on the coil is felt everywhere at once.
- Door gasket not sealing along its full height — Second, and usually alignment rather than wear. A tall door racks and then seals at the top while standing off at the bottom.
- Condenser starved of air — Third. A cabinet pushed hard against a wall or boxed into an alcove recirculates its own heat.
- Evaporator fan not running — Fourth, and the reason food near the coil stays hard while the rest of the cabinet softens.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, least common, and the only cause here that no owner check will resolve.

- Test the gasket with a sheet of paper at top and bottom — Second. Grip at the top with release at the bottom means a racked door, which hinges can usually correct.
- Pull the cabinet clear and give the back room to breathe — Third. A condenser recirculating its own warm air produces exactly this symptom with nothing broken.
- Check the temperature before planning a repair — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, minus 18 Celsius, or below. Above that, move what matters now.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the evaporator with a knife or screwdriver - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture converts a defrost fault into a sealed-system replacement. Do not use a heat gun inside the cabinet to speed a defrost.
