The short answer

- A sheet of frost on the rear wall rather than a light dusting — A stalled defrost cycle: the ice is now the blockage.
- The base grille is warm to the touch and the air behind it is still — Condenser heat with no airflow to carry it away.
- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warm — Nothing is running at all, which is a supply or start-relay fault and not this page.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Blocked condenser airflow at the base grille — First on this family, because the niche install makes that grille the only air path. It is also the one cause an owner can clear completely in minutes.
- Stalled defrost leaving the evaporator iced — Second. With one evaporator there is no alternative cooling path, so ice on it warms the entire cabinet at once.

Check in this order, and why
- Pull the plinth grille and look behind it — First, because it is the likeliest cause here and needs no tools. Clear dust, and make sure nothing is stored against it.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at the bottom corner, then the top — Second. A tall door that grips at the top and releases at the bottom is racked, not worn.
- Look at the rear wall inside for a frost sheet — Third: a sheet rather than a dusting says the defrost cycle has stalled and the ice is now the blockage.
- Listen for the evaporator fan with the door switch held — Fourth, and the last owner-side check. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 18 Celsius, or below - if it is above that, move what matters now rather than after the diagnosis.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator with a knife or screwdriver: the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture turns a defrost fault into a sealed-system replacement. When to call a technician
Call once the grille is clear, the gasket seals along the whole door and the fan runs, because what remains is a defrost component or the sealed system and both need instruments. Call immediately if you see oil at the base or smell burning - oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
