The short answer
A Beko BVF freezer that runs without holding temperature is usually losing its cold rather than failing to make it. This is a freestanding upright, so its condenser draws from the room and its single full-height door is the largest seam in the cabinet - which puts the gasket and the room around the appliance above the sealed system in the order of suspicion.
What you observe
- The compressor runs almost continuously and food is still soft — Heat is being made and not rejected, which is a condenser airflow problem until proven otherwise.
- Frost builds heavily at the bottom of the cabinet — Where a racked door lets warm air in, frost forms first.
- The cabinet sides are hot to the touch — Normal to a point on this design, but hot sides plus a warm interior means the heat has nowhere to go.
- A sheet of frost on the rear wall rather than a dusting — The defrost cycle has stalled and the ice is now blocking the airflow.
- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warm — Nothing is running at all, which is a supply or start-relay fault and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Condenser starved of room air — First on a freestanding upright, because the appliance has no dedicated air path. A wall, an alcove or a neighbouring heat source all produce the same result.
- Door gasket not sealing along the full height — Second, and usually a racked door rather than a worn seal: the gasket grips at the top and releases at the bottom.
- Stalled defrost leaving the evaporator iced — Third. With one evaporator serving the whole cabinet, ice on it warms every shelf at once.
- Evaporator fan not running — Fourth, and the explanation when the food near the coil stays hard while the rest softens.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, least common, and the only one that is not an owner check or a placement fix.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at where the cabinet stands before you open anything — First, and free: pull it clear of the wall, check what is beside it, and give the back and sides room to breathe for a day.
- Test the gasket with a sheet of paper at the bottom corner, then the top — Second. Grip at the top and release at the bottom is a racked door, which hinges can often correct.
- Look at the rear wall inside for a frost sheet — Third: a sheet says the defrost cycle stalled and the ice is now the blockage.
- Check the temperature before you plan the repair — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, minus 18 Celsius, or below. Above that, move what matters now rather than after the diagnosis.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator with a knife or screwdriver - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture turns a defrost fault into a sealed-system replacement. An upright freezer is top-heavy when loaded, so empty it before moving it rather than after.

When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet has room to breathe, the gasket seals along the whole door and the fan runs, because what remains is a defrost component or the sealed system and both need instruments. Call immediately if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning - oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
