The answer first
If the machine hums but the drum does not turn, that is a different fault: the motor has power and something is stopping it, usually a broken belt or a seized part. On the ALFD line specifically, the platform's layout is what decides which of those gets checked first.
What you observe on a ALFD unit
- The panel lights but nothing happens on start — Power is present and something is preventing the cycle. This is the ALFD tell that separates the branches.
- It hums but the drum does not turn — A broken belt or a seized component; the motor has power and cannot move the drum.
- It worked until the cycle it cut out on, and has been dead since — The classic thermal-fuse signature, and the vent is the usual reason.
- The breaker trips when start is pressed — A real electrical fault and a reason to leave the breaker off.
- NEAR MISS: it runs but is very loud — A noise fault, covered separately.
Causes, most likely first on the ALFD line
- A failed or misaligned door switch — Ranked first. The control will not start with a door it reads as open, and the switch is a wear item on a part that is slammed thousands of times. Nothing in how the ALFD line is put together changes where this sits.
- A failed start switch or push-button — Real and cheap, and diagnosed after the free checks rather than guessed at.
- A control board fault — Last, and what remains when everything above has been eliminated.
The checking order
- Check the breaker, the isolating switch and the socket — For an electric dryer check both halves of a double breaker, fully off and on. The ALFD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Listen for a hum when start is pressed — A hum with no drum movement is a belt or a seized part, not a power problem.
- Turn the drum by hand with the power off — A drum that spins freely with no resistance at all often means the belt has broken.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the appliance at the breaker before a screwdriver touches it. Never bridge or remove a thermal fuse to get the machine running: it opened because the appliance overheated, and bypassing it removes the protection that stopped a lint fire.
