The answer first
ALFD models take this one slightly differently. Start at the vent. A restricted duct makes cycles longer, then makes them cut out on a thermal cut-out, and finally makes them stop almost immediately. What an owner actually sees on a ALFD unit
- Cycles have been getting longer for months — The airflow slide, and it usually precedes everything else here. This is what an owner of a ALFD dryer sees first.
- Only the outside of the load is dry — The drum is overloaded and the load is not tumbling.
- An error code or flashing indicator — The machine has detected the condition and is reporting it.
- NEAR MISS: the machine will not start at all — A start fault, covered separately.
Causes, most likely first on the ALFD line
- A restricted vent duct — Ranked first because it explains every version of this complaint: long cycles, cut-outs and damp loads all follow from air that cannot leave. Nothing in how the ALFD line is put together changes where this sits.
- Overloading the drum — Second: a packed drum does not tumble, so the air never reaches most of the load and the sensor reads whatever touches it.
- A thermal cut-out opening and resetting — A consequence rather than a cause: it opens because the machine is overheating, and the machine overheats because of the duct.
- A control or timer fault — Last and least likely. It usually shows itself in other behaviour as well.
The checking order
- Run a timed cycle instead of an automatic one — A timed cycle that dries properly isolates the moisture sensor, and it costs nothing but one load. The ALFD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Go outside and check the vent hood flap while it runs — Weak flow there explains long cycles, cut-outs and damp clothes at once.
- Clean the lint filter and wash it under a tap — Water that beads rather than running through means a softener film is sealing the mesh.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the appliance before cleaning the duct or the housing, and let the drum and the cabinet cool first. Never bypass a thermal fuse or a cut-out to make a cycle complete; it opened for a reason and the reason is still there.

The line between a fix and a call
Stop and call if the machine cuts out repeatedly and restarts as it cools with a duct you have proven clear. A cut-out operating over and over is a thermostat question and it is not owner work.
