The answer first
No heat with a turning drum means the heat source has been cut, not that the motor has failed. Whether it was cut by a safety device, a supply problem or a failed element is what the checking order decides. On the ALFD line specifically, the platform's layout is what decides which of those gets checked first.
What an owner actually sees on a ALFD unit
- Loads have been taking longer for weeks or months — The classic slow slide of a vent filling with lint, and it usually precedes the no-heat call. This is what an owner of a ALFD dryer sees first.
- The lint filter is packed after every load — Worth noticing: it means airflow is marginal even before the duct is considered.
- It heats for a few minutes and then goes cold — A thermal cut-out opening as the machine overheats, which is an airflow signature rather than a failed element.
- On a gas dryer, no smell of gas and no ignition sound — The supply or the igniter, and the branch is different from an electric machine.
- NEAR MISS: it is loud as well as cold — Check the noise page too; a seized blower produces both.
Causes, most likely first on the ALFD line
- A blocked lint filter — Ranked first because it is free, instant, and the most common restriction of all. A filter that looks clear can be sealed by fabric-softener film that water beads on rather than passes through. Nothing in how the ALFD line is put together changes where this sits.
- A vent hood flap stuck shut outside — Second. Paint, a bird nest or a flap iced shut in winter closes the run at the last inch and produces the same symptom as a blocked duct.
- A failed thermostat or control — Last, and diagnosed by elimination after the airflow path has been proven clear.
The checking order
- Pull the lint filter and hold it under a running tap — Water that beads and sits on the mesh rather than running straight through means it is sealed with softener film. The ALFD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Go outside and watch the vent hood while the dryer runs — A flap that barely moves, or air you cannot feel, is the whole diagnosis in one look.
- Disconnect the duct at the back and run the dryer briefly — Strong hot air with the duct off, and nothing with it on, names the duct conclusively.
- Note whether it heats briefly and then stops — That pattern is a thermal cut-out doing its job, which points at airflow rather than at the element.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Power off at the breaker before opening anything, and keep it off while you work. On a gas appliance, close the supply tap as well. If you smell gas at any point: do not touch a switch, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

The line between a fix and a call
Stop and call on a gas dryer if the tap is open and there is no ignition: the igniter, the valve coils and the flame sensor are gas-appliance work and not owner work. Leave the tap closed while you wait.
