On the Aviva ALFD dryer line, the first question is whether the noise is there when the drum is empty. A rumble that only appears with a load is a roller or a bearing under weight; one that is there always is the blower or the belt. What changes against the brand-generic answer is the order of the checks, not the list of causes.
What an owner actually sees on a ALFD unit
- A rhythmic thump that follows the drum rotation — A belt with a flat spot or a seam, and it is the most common single noise on this appliance. On the ALFD line this is where the checking starts.
- A squeal that rises as the drum comes up to speed — The idler pulley or a dry drum roller.
- A grinding rumble that is worse with a full load — A drum roller that has worn flat under weight.
- Drying is slower as well as louder — The blower is the shared cause, because it makes the noise and moves the air.
- NEAR MISS: noisy and not heating — Check the heating page as well; a seized blower can produce both.
Ranked causes on the ALFD line
- A coin or a button in the blower housing — Ranked first because it is the cheapest to fix and among the most common: a sharp rattle, unmistakable once heard, and the object is usually retrievable. This holds its place across the ALFD models listed below.
- A worn or flat-spotted drive belt — Second. It produces the rhythmic thump that follows drum rotation and it is a wear part on every dryer.
- Worn drum glides or a worn rear bearing — A scraping rather than a rumble, and it usually develops slowly over years.
- A failing motor bearing — Last, and diagnosed after everything above. It is the one that also affects whether the drum turns at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the dryer empty and listen — A noise that persists with an empty drum is the blower or the belt; one that only appears loaded is a roller. The ALFD layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Turn the drum by hand with the power off — Roughness or a catch you can feel is a roller or a bearing, and it is felt long before it is heard clearly.
- Note whether drying has slowed as well — That combination names the blower and saves guessing.
- Check the machine is level and all four feet carry weight — Free, and it explains a vibration that carries through the floor.

Power off at the breaker before opening anything and keep it off for the whole job. On a gas dryer, close the gas tap as well before the machine is moved. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
