The fault classes in order of how often they come up
- An unbalanced load — It leads because a single heavy item — a towel, a mat, a duvet — puts the drum out of balance and the machine has no way to fix it.
- A restricted or absent water supply — It leads because it is free to check and because it produces the most baffling symptom — a machine that appears to be doing nothing at all.
- A blocked pump filter or coin trap — First, and it is not close: the filter exists precisely to catch what would otherwise reach the pump, and it fills.
- An inlet hose or tap connection weeping — First, because it is under mains pressure all the time and because rubber washers harden and take a set.
- No supply at the outlet, the plug or the breaker — It leads because a dead panel can only mean supply, and a lamp in the same socket settles it in seconds.
