What is going on across the STW line
On an Avanti STW washer noise sorts by when it happens. A grinding on every rotation is something in the drum or the pump; a thumping only at spin is balance or suspension; a squeal that rises with speed is a bearing or a belt. Timing the noise to the cycle stage is the whole diagnosis.
What you notice first
- A squeal or rumble that rises with drum speed — On the STW line, a drum bearing or a belt under load, and both get progressively worse rather than better.
- Thumping and walking only during the spin — On STW models, classic out-of-balance: a heavy item on one side, or a machine not level on all four feet.
- A grinding or gravel noise during drain — Within the STW family, debris in the pump housing or a fouled impeller makes exactly this at the drain step.
- A hum with no drum movement at all — On an STW model, a motor or a belt that has failed, or a drum jammed by something, which is a different fault.
- The machine moves across the floor during the spin — For the STW line, a walking machine strains its own hoses and connections, so it is worth fixing promptly.
- NEAR MISS — noise plus water on the floor — A walking machine strains its hoses. Read the water-leak page for your model line, because the leak is the urgent half.
Likely causes for STW models, most common first
- An unbalanced load — First, because it is the most common by a wide margin and it needs nothing but a rearranged drum.
- A coin, wire or button between drum and tub — It sits here because the noise is distinctive and because leaving it in eventually costs the drum. It is ranked the same way on every STW model.
- Worn suspension, dampers or springs — The tub no longer settles, so it knocks the cabinet at every spin and walks even when level.
- A failing drum bearing or a worn belt — It comes last because everything cheaper imitates it, and because bearing work is a major repair on most machines. The same order applies across the STW family.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and redistribute the load by hand — For STW models, if the spin then runs quietly, the fault was the load and nothing needs repairing.
- Push each top corner and check for rock — Level it in both directions and make sure the lock nuts are tight against the cabinet.
- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and listen — On STW models in particular, a rattle or a scrape as it turns points to an object between drum and tub, or a bearing.
- Check behind the machine for transit bolts or packing — Look for bolts or plastic blocks at the back and underneath; keep them somewhere in case it moves again.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Power off at the plug or the breaker before any investigation inside the machine — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Get help to move a washer: they are heavy, top-heavy when wet, and a dropped machine damages hoses and feet. Every switch stays wired as found.

Call when the load, the level, the transit fittings, the drum and the pump are all clear and the noise remains — especially if it tracks drum speed or the tub knocks the cabinet at every spin. Both of those point at suspension or bearings, which need the machine opened on a bench.
