The short answer for CTW models
Standing water at the end of a cycle on an Avanti CTW washer has three usual causes: a blocked filter, a kinked or badly-routed drain hose, and a pump impeller fouled by a foreign object. All three are owner territory, and the order they are in is the order to check them.
Signs you can observe
- The pump hums but nothing moves — On CTW models, hum without drainage points at a foreign object in the pump rather than at a dead motor.
- The machine sits at the same point in the cycle for a long time — Within the CTW family, many controls extend or repeat the drain step instead of reporting a fault.
- Water comes back into the drum after it has emptied — Within the CTW family, a drain hose without its required high loop siphons the water straight back in.
- Water backs up out of the standpipe or the sink — On CTW models, if water appears outside the machine, look at the standpipe before you open the filter.
- The drum will not spin even when empty — On CTW models, an empty drum that refuses to spin is not a drainage complaint at all.
- NEAR MISS — it never filled in the first place — An empty drum and an unfinished cycle is a fill fault. Check both taps and the inlet screens instead.
What goes wrong here, most frequent first
- A blocked pump filter or coin trap — First, and it is not close: the filter exists precisely to catch what would otherwise reach the pump, and it fills.
- A kinked, crushed or badly routed drain hose — Ranked second because it is created by installation and by every time the machine is moved. That is the position it takes on this family.
- A missing or collapsed high loop in the drain hose — Without a rise above the water level in the drum the hose siphons, and the machine can empty itself into the drain or refill from it.
- A control or wiring fault at the pump circuit — Last: boards and harnesses do fail, but far less often than a filter fills. That holds for every CTW model listed here.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the pump filter and empty it — In the CTW family, this is the first and most productive check on the page, and it is designed to be done by hand.
- Test the household drain with a bucket of water — If the standpipe cannot take a bucket quickly, the machine was never the problem.
- Check the drain hose has a rise above the drum — Look at how the hose is clipped at the back, and whether it has been pushed flat against the wall.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose by hand — Within the CTW family, a crush behind the machine is invisible from the front and it is extremely common.

Switch the washer off at its socket or breaker and put a towel and a shallow tray down before opening any filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the water behind that cover can be hot. Never open a filter with a cycle part-way through; let it cool and let it drain into the tray.
