In short, on URBD models
Warm inside and clearly running is the classic airflow complaint on an Avanti URBD refrigerator. The compressor is doing its job and the cold is not reaching the shelves — frost on the evaporator, dust on the condenser, or a fan that has stopped turning. Start with the two you can see and hear before anyone quotes you a sealed system.
What you notice first
- Food safety is already marginal — On URBD models in particular, milk sours early and lettuce wilts within a day — the cabinet is above the safe holding temperature.
- Frost building on the back wall of the fresh-food section — On URBD models, humid air getting in past a seal, or a defrost cycle that is no longer clearing what it makes.
- The compressor runs and never stops — On URBD models, continuous running with no cycling off is the same fault seen from the electrical side.
- The freezer section still makes ice but the fresh-food side is warm — On this family, cold is being produced and not distributed, which is the airflow reading rather than a refrigerant one.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or control fault, and it is a different page. If you hear nothing at all, go there instead.
What actually fails on URBD models, in order
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — It leads on these cabinets because the evaporator sits directly behind the rear panel with very little clearance, so even a thin sheet closes the air path completely.
- A stuck air damper between the compartments — On a two-compartment cabinet the damper meters cold air, and a stuck one starves one side while the other over-freezes. It sits there for URBD models too.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — It comes last because everything above it is cheaper, more likely and checkable without a gauge set — and because this one needs a licensed technician.
Where to start, and what follows
- Open the door and listen for the circulating fan — On every URBD model in the table, hold the door switch in if you must — the fan should be audible within a second or two, and silence narrows the list immediately.
- Feel and look at the condenser coil — On URBD models in particular, at the back or underneath, it should be warm and clean; hot and furred means the heat has nowhere to go.
- Measure the gap behind and above the cabinet by eye — Within the URBD family, pull it forward a hand-width and run it for a day: if it improves, clearance was the limit.

Pull the plug or trip the breaker first — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Two people move a loaded cabinet, not one: these machines are top-heavy with the door open, and a dropped cabinet flattens the condenser tubing. Keep the door switch and its harness intact throughout.

When this stops being an owner job
Call once the airflow checks come back clean, or the moment the evidence points at the sealed system: refrigerant is licensed work and the tools are not owner tools. Call immediately if you smell burning, see oil around the compressor, or the breaker trips when the unit starts — oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour it runs after that adds to the bill.
