The answer first
On an AVFF cabinet the defrost drain is the first suspect for any water found inside, and it is also the one an owner can often clear. Before that, though, check the cabinet is level and that the door is closing, because both misdirect condensate and both are free to fix.
How the fault presents
- A steady drip that does not stop — Steady rather than cyclic points at a supply connection, and that one is worth isolating immediately.
- Water running down the inside back wall onto a shelf — Melt leaving the evaporator area by the wrong route.
- An old stain on the floor with no visible water now — An intermittent leak on the defrost cycle rather than a continuous one.
- NEAR MISS — water plus a new rattle from underneath — A pan that has shifted makes noise and spills at the same time, and both stop when it is seated properly.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Defrost drain blocked — Every cycle melts the frost off the evaporator and sends it down a small drain to a pan underneath. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — The pan sits over the compressor so its heat can evaporate what collects. It ranks second on AVFF rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Cabinet not level, so condensate runs the wrong way — The channels inside a refrigerator rely on a slight tilt backwards to work. Third: common enough on refrigeration generally, but on a cabinet of this size the two above it account for most of what walks in the door.
What to check first, second, third
- Where to begin on this model group — The first checks are the ones that can be made with the cabinet standing where it is; moving it comes later and only if those are clean.
- Find the drain opening and check it takes water — It sits at the base of the compartment. A spoonful of warm water poured in should disappear; if it sits, the drain is the fault.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the pan — It should sit square on its bracket and be damp rather than brimming. Note whether it is cracked or merely displaced.
- Check the cabinet sits square and slightly back — A spirit level across the top, or a door that swings open on its own, tells you in seconds.

Pull the plug or open the breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Pulling an AVFF cabinet out to reach the back is the other half of the hazard: it is a heavy, top-loaded box on a hard floor, so walk it out rather than dragging it, and keep the door shut while it moves so the weight stays where you expect it.

When this stops being owner work
Two conditions make this a service call rather than a Saturday job: the cause is behind a sealed panel, or the cause is the sealed system itself. Either way the tools are not owner tools and the refrigerant is not owner-serviceable.
