What this usually is on AVFF cabinets
A noisy AVFF refrigerator is usually a fault of installation rather than of manufacture — feet out of adjustment, a cabinet against a wall, a pan that has shifted. On a compact machine there is less mass to absorb vibration, so a small imbalance is audible in a way it would not be on a full-size unit. That is why levelling leads the order.
What the owner sees
- A single knock when the machine starts or stops — The compressor moving on its mounts as the load comes on or off.
- A scraping or ticking that speeds up and slows down — A blade catching something, and it changes as the blade changes speed.
- Opening the door makes the noise stop — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so anything that stops with the door belongs to it.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Condenser fan blade striking debris, or its bearing dry — The condenser fan lives at the bottom of the cabinet where paper, dust and pet hair collect. Ranked second because it explains the cases the first cause does not, and because on this family the two are checked from the same side of the cabinet.
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. Third on AVFF: it is still something you can see rather than measure, but it takes the cabinet emptied or moved and the two above it do not.
The order of checks, and why it is this one
- Where to begin on this model group — The first two checks change the noise if they are the cause, which makes them self-proving; everything after them requires a look behind or under the cabinet.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.
- Isolate the machine and turn the condenser fan by hand — It should spin freely and stop smoothly. Grinding or a catch names the part.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.

Isolate before you open: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination to avoid here — dry the floor before you start, and if the fault has already put water near the plug or the cord, isolate at the breaker rather than by pulling the plug out of a wet socket.

When this stops being owner work
Book a technician once the checks above come back clean, and book one straight away if any of three things is true: the compressor is hot and silent, the breaker will not hold, or there is oil at a joint. Those three each mean the fault has moved past the part of the machine an owner can reach.
